This seems to be one case where PPRUNE is behind the general press and grapevine...
The plane was 5Y-BUG, found by an enterprising KWS pilot who used Nairobi ATC Radar to pinpoint the wreck on the west side of the Aberdares' southern peak at between 11,000 and 12,000'. The pictures indicate that there is very little left of the aircraft, and no chance of any survivors. It is being reported that the two passengers were mother and daughter (variously English or Swiss depending on the reports) and the pilot was Harro Trempenau (ex Aeroclub Chairman). Every year we lose yet another person or persons through CFIT. In this day and age of GPS, EGPWS etc, it really should NOT be happening. And the worst thing of all is that we STILL won't learn from this (or any of the other annual fatalities that occur here). Its about time Kenyan aviation woke up and started to pay attention to what is happening and why. And doing something about it. None of these people should have lost their lives... |
You don't need GPS/EGPWS to know not to arse about below MSA in a claggy area where granite lurks.
|
Any actual clues as to the reason for the accident ? CFIT in bad weather or mechanical failure ?
I'd have thought that Harro would have been aware about the elevation of the aberdares and his position . A combination of distraction and loss of SA like the SSJ in indonesia ??? |
Another aspect of this very sorry story is the issue of ELTs . We are constantly berated by the authorities if we have not had the ELT battery expiry dates prominently displayed ....blah , blah , blah .... But as one old and respected engineer pointed out to me , there is no system/ equipment in Kenya to actually locate an ELT which is surely bleeping after a high impact crash such as this one obviously was . It's a disgrace .
|
So sad I used to skydive with Harro in Canada in the early 70's.

Since the introduction of the 406 mhz ELT , the system works exclusively by satellite . The info being relayed automatically to the appropriate MCC ( mission Control Center ) which then informs the local ATC / Authorities with all the required informations .
The list of MCC : AEMCC United Arab Emirates ALMCC Algiers, Algeria ARMCC El Palomar, Argentina ASMCC Cape Town, South Africa AUMCC Canberra, Australia BRMCC Brasilia, Brazil CHMCC Santiago, Chile CMC Moscow, Russia CMCC Trenton, Canada CNMCC Beijing, P. R. of China FMCC Toulouse, France GRMCC Athens, Greece HKMCC Hong Kong, China IDMCC Jakarta, Indonesia INMCC Bangalore, India ITMCC Bari, Italy JAMCC Tokyo, Japan KOMCC Incheon, Rep. of Korea NIMCC Abuja, Nigeria NMCC Bodoe, Norway PAMCC Karachi, Pakistan PEMCC Callao, Peru SAMCC Jeddah, Saudi Arabia SIMCC Singapore, Singapore SPMCC Maspalomas, Spain TAMCC Taipei, ITDC THMCC Bangkok, Thailand TRMCC Ankara, Turkey UKMCC Kinloss, UK USMCC Suitland, USA VNMCC Haiphong, Vietnam They basically cover the entire surface of the globe , including the poles . Nothing to do with Local/National infrastructures anymore . |
Ok , but why did it not help then ?
|
As far as search & rescue went, I don't think anyone asked the right person the right question - until the KWS chopper pilot asked ATC. Until then everyone was conducting a visual search based on estimates.
And there are some rumours that the ELT didn't transmit for long enough. But even an ELT won't help if you're flying around hills in cloud. |
An ELT signal should at least be able to generate a set of coordinates to assist ground search if cloud etc are still present . This whole farce is totally unacceptable in this day and age . Nobody had a clue for two days .
