Ethiopian airlines 777 conditions

Hi guys,
I have read the threads concerning the training issues etc at Ethiopian. I was hoping to get some feedback from any 777 guys on what the flying conditions, destinations and rosters are like . If someone could share this through here or pm it would be really helpful. Just trying to see what my options are. Thanks .

hey there

777 seems to fly to guangzhou from Addis ababa.. you goona join them this year ?

thatwasclose 2nd Jul 2013 16:34

No probably not. Just seeing what is was like. Had a few replies, seems like expats are mostly doing the F flights to Los Accra and liege, lots of roster disruption and middle of the night stuff. Trying to get away from middle of the night flying but seems hard to do!

Ghost_Rider737 3rd Jul 2013 15:39

The 777 is a long haul aircraft.....how can anyone expect to fly a long haul aircraft and not do "the middle of the night stuff" ?

Sorry for stating the obvious.
Try Dash 8/ATR or CRJ operators. Not many of those flying around in the wee hours....

I was in Hong Kong (intl departures lounge) lastnight and couldn't help notice the staggering number of flights that leave between 2300 and 0400 local.

It's insane to travel at those times but I guess it's not gonna get any better with the worlds population growing at an alarming rate.....most of whom originate in Asia.

Hard to understand...

...how a professional with a minimal self respect would even consider joining an outfit that don't pay salary during 'training', even if current with tons of hours on type; salary way below market; expats operate only cargo flight. That's why our colleague commented about night flights.
It's about being throw at some f....places mid Africa on delayed flights, cancellations, horrible weather, ATC, infrastructure, etc.
It's not about taking off from HKG, NYC etc and fly 10, 12 hr all night long making to a decent layover.
A poor outfit, bottom feeder airline.
Stay away.

Ghost_Rider737 3rd Jul 2013 18:38

Sorry gents , I'm not with ET. I was just giving my 2 cents worth....

White Knight 3rd Jul 2013 19:05

Got to agree with Ghost_Rider... Big jet = 24 hours; expat or local:ugh::ugh::ugh:

Tell me . . .

I think it is safe to say that ET is the best African airline, from a passenger perspective. Is the same true from a pilot's perspective? If there's a better airline, let's hear about it. Lots of winging on this site, why not give some props to the airline that does the best by its pilots and staff.

This is one of the good things about the wonderfull tool Pprune is: to share information among professionals.
:ok:

Ghost_Rider737 9th Jul 2013 16:11

It doesn't matter who you fly for or what aircraft you fly ......

As long as you are paid on time, everytime :ok:

If the above doesn't happen , then it is a crap gig !

atpcliff 10th Jul 2013 08:38

From what I have heard and read, I think Ethiopian is one of the better airlines. Addis Abbeba is also a very nice place to live, in my opinion.

EVERY airline has it's naysayers. Is Ethiopian the best? No. If I were you, I would investigate a job there, and not just blindly turn it down.

I have heard that Qatar, and living in Doha is not very nice. But, I know a pilot there, and he and his wife like the airline and they like living in Doha. The same goes for Emirates and Dubai.

Not even close.

atpcliff 11th Jul 2013 07:18

I think the best four airlines in Africa are Ethiopian, Keyna Airways, Royal Air Moroc and South African, in alphabetical order. I have never flown as a passenger on SA, just one of their regional partners in a J-41.

I personally think that Ethiopian is better than KA or RAM.

I also have read that quite a few SA guys were leaving for the Middle East because they didn't want their families to live in Johannesburg.

Ghost_Rider737 15th Jul 2013 16:36

The number of pilots leaving SA to the Middle East has dwindled to a trickle.

But yes , a few years ago many guys left SA due to the current inept leadership in government. But that's a story for another day :ugh:

WYOMINGPILOT 23rd Jul 2013 07:04

Has Ethiopian allowed any ExPat 767 Captains to train on the 777? Are all the new 777 pilots current/qualified pilots or does Ethiopian sponsor a type rating training for 767 Captains to switch to the 777?

fourgolds 30th Jul 2013 11:52

Hi all
Still no real answers about this contract. Is it confirmed that expats only fly the 777 freighter exclusively ? What are the rosters like on your 20 days on duty do they really not comply with rest rules and work 120 hours in 20 days etc ? Seems questionable ?
Do they positive space you home on the 10 days off ?
Do they really delay training so as not to pay expats ?
Anyone had real experience with this as opposed to our beloved rumour network ?
What about longevity of this contract , some offer 1 year contract , some offer 3 years. What's the scoop from those expats already there , how long has the longest expat been there ?

Would really like to here from someone go actually works or did work there .
I know of a 777 captain who failed his training there and is spreading venom about the place ( he did not hack it at his previous employer either). Just trying to be objective from anyone who has actually hacked it and works/worked there.
Many thanks to anyone who can assist.
