All arguments in here are partially right. There is good and bad to protectionism. Ask the Japanese and the Americans. Both have their points. It's not a black and white world. As an Australian though I can point out that the last thing we are is protectionist.

OK, and how is that ANY different than Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mocambique, Madagascar, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda, Congo, DRC, Ethiopia (sorry if I missed anyone).
In each of THOSE countries, you can not get a work permit if you are a pilot unless you have a DEFINITE offer of employment from a company in that country, and that company must show that it advertised AND interviewed locals, and iin a couple of those countries, it must even show that the CAA has APPROVED the candidate as being qualified and that there ARE NO qualified locals for the position.

The primary function of any form of government is to secure, protect and defend the rights, privileges and interests of it's citizens. All other things are secondary, all other classes and categories of people come later. Any regional coalitions and groups, (G7,G22, G???) are design to fortify the first principle. It's just a shame that most African countries have not quite understood how that works.

What world do you live in? Show me ONE country where the primary function of the government is to secure, protect, defend rights, privileges and interests of its citizens - Just one, and I'll think about accepting your argument, but honestly, show me ONE country where this is true, just ONE, any ONE.

But, still, you didn't name a single country where all that stuff that "should" be fundamental to a democracy are in fact primary. I would even put to you that no democratic government has even been established with those goals as it's primary objective. Some of those may have been "stated" as the primary objective, or some other priority, however, in reality, the purpose of establishing a government, any government, any where, throughout history, has NEVER been to protect its citizens - at least not all or even most of its citizens. The real purpose behind every government ever established has been the protection of certain citizens and certain interests.

Accepting that human beings have been unable, or unwilling, to create a government that has the purpose of protecting its citizenry does not preclude one from ALL rational thought, but it does prevent one from accepting any argument that is based upon the concept of governments responsibility to protect its citizenry.

The only thing that should be considered is skill not where you come from or what passport you have. I have seen locals who should not be even allowed near an aircraft. Would you prefer to take someone like that just because he has a particular country's citizenship ?

Why should that be so? Germany was the third largest colonial power in Afrika and Rommel was a better general than anyone either of the other two powers could throw into the steamy cauldron.

the map of colonies is interesting, it would me more interesting, to me anyway, to see a map of the european languages spoken in those areas though, that to me would be more indicative of the influence of europe on africa.
And the locals in namibia speak a lot of german and afrikaans, so afrika is used in nambia as well as south africa where people speak a lot of afrikaans.
However in most of the areas where germany was the colonizer, the european language adopted is not german, but rather french or portuguese or english. so to my way of thinking the germans may have been great at conquering, but were not very good at influencing the local population.
