I dont think the market in Maun is that down, people are wairy to hire at the moment becuase nobody knows what next year is going to do. The fact is that some companies is losing people and that those people needs to be replaced. The only ones going to get the job is those that are right here in Maun when the hiring starts!

Hi Guys,
I have a JAA Frozen ATP and for the past 7 months I have been working were I have been working for the past 5 years, in the operations department of a handling company as I cannot land a flight deck job due to this "economic climate". I keep asking pilots how to get your first job and Africa keeps pooping up. I don't really mind were I work as long as I fly. I would like to know if it is worth going down to Maun at this point in time and if so were to look. |

F117A, how about you read this thread, which happens to be all about MAUN.
Secondly, as has been stated in this thread, maun is not the place to go just for building hours. You WILL be living in AFRICA and it will be different from living in your parents house. FLYING IN AFRICA should be your main reason for going, not I CANT FIND A JOB, I HEARD MAUN HAS SOME. You WILL be miserable if you arent up for the adventure, drinking, etc. That is MAUN LIFE. |

Sorry but I was only asking on were to look. Yes I know its Maun but were should I start off apart from the pub.. I have read most of the threads and I not just going down to Africa to build hours but to get a job and have fun with some real flying.
I just want to know is it worth going down at the moment. I am seriously thinking of going at the end of november or mid december. Thanks |

There is no hiring happening in Maun at the moment so apart from saying hello to the CP's and getting your face known nothing is likely to happen. I would go once you here there is some movement otherwise you are spending money with no chance of success. I was talking to my mates there just a couple of days ago and it is really quiet. When I went and worked there I checked before leaving that there was at least some hiring going to happen which is the opposite of now. And as someone pointed out earlier, go there because you want to fly in Africa not because you just want hours. If this is not the case become one of the many bitter and twisted instructors you can find at most local airfields. |
I have been looking into the idea of bush flying after I get my CPL. Im studying for my ATPLs at the moment and I plan on getting my CPL in the summer of 2011. I was reading the question and answer page on the Seofane website this morning and they say they require pilots to hold a valid instrument rating. Is this a standard for most companies out there? Just wondering as I don't plan on doing my IR for at least a year after my CPL (Saving up and paying for most of the training myself as I don't fancy huge debts with not many chances of a job right now!).

For Maun you do not need an instrument rating as all the flying is VFR so you can either do it before and then have to renew it after Maun or just do it after and save some cash. Not sure about Sefo but the other companies really don't care if you have it or not.
If Sefo ask for it and you want to work for the weirdest charter company in Maun then I guess before is your only option. |

Yep, and like 90% of the other people with IFR, I am nearly up for my first renewal, and I have only used IFR once, privately.
On a different note, whos in Maun at the moment that wouldnt mind kicking back with a newbie and showing him around the place? Shout you a drink or two for your time and effort (sounds like im trying to buy me a escourt...) |

No there is no IF flight in Maun yes you may have to use your A/H a few times during the rains but otherwise it is not required as the weather in Maun for the best part of the year is non existent. As for calling all pilots with just a cpl a glorified ppl, well that's the sort of arrogance I would only expect from a bone head. I know a guy with 33,000hrs and no instrument rating is he a glorified PPL. |
