Cargo plane detained for illegal landing
By NATION Correspondent_

A cargo plane was yesterday detained by Kenya Civil Aviation Authority officials for landing in the country without permission.

Five crew members were under police surveillance after they landed at the Eldoret Airport in the morning.

The plane was carrying electronic and textile goods._

An airport official who did not want to be named said the plane arrived from Sharja, United Arabs Emirate.

It was parked near the control tower when the Nation arrived at the airport.

The official, who said the matter would end up in court, blamed the plane's Nairobi agents for failing to get clearance in advance.

Airport employees commended the police and KCAA for being alert.

There has been increased security at the airport since the government issued an anti-terrorism alert.

The airport has lately been quite busy. Four World Food Programme planes airlift relief food to Southern Sudan and Turkana area from the airport after the road link to Lodwar was cut off following the destruction of a bridge in West Pokot District.

The planes make two trips daily.

The airport has no regular cargo flights and the only regular passenger flight is operated by Kenya Airways through its subsidiary, the Flamingo Airlines._
