C206 Down in ZAMBIA

Bad news!

I just heard that a 206 (9J-RZL) went down yesterday in Zambia on his way back to Lusaka.

The plane was the only 206 operating from FLLS since proflight's 206 went donw last season.

This time they did not have the same luck as my scottish friend who landed in the river bank , but appenrently they experienced a engine fire , the pilot made a emmergency landing but it did not happen like in the books woth a very hilly terrain and according to the info that I got they have been burned badly . The crash landing took place near a village and the local people helped the occupants to exit the 206 in flame.

I do not know the origin of the pax , but the pilot is a South African pilot who has been flying for this charter company for just over a year and an half.

This info have not been 100% confirmed , so I ask the pilots who operate in the region to give more details .

Not nice to hear.Has the crash been comfirmed.
I have done quite a few hours in same a/c whilst flying in Lusaka.
It belonged to Theo Gia????? (I thinks Avocet),and was a nice 206 to fly.
So if you have any feed back then please post.
Thanks.

Hi Goffel ,

Yes it seems that the plane is the Theo's 206 ( RZL) , I have done +/- 800 hours with them , and quite a lot on the same 206 . AAvocet and Airwaves Airlink do not operate together as they used to be 2 years ago . Airwaves operates a C182 , C 206 , C210 and a new C208B while Avocet operates a C 401A & a C402B.

I have not received any confirmation about the crash but I will get more info by the end of the week .

I heard also that the pax + pilot have been medevac to JNB after the zambian air force ??? rescued them from the crash site. INFO NOT COMFIRMED AT 100%!

I just hope all the occupants are OK .

C206 Down in TZ too

Salut Gusto,

Very bad news for the community, hope they come out ok. Here too, we've had an accident last week when N30MS (one of the FMS C206) went down on a flight HTAR-Loliondo. Fortunately everyone is alive (6 on board) but one or 2 got seriously injured. The plane was on the climb passing a ridge below Monduli when it was caught in a downdraught. Pilot save their lives by doing an escape manoeuvre. Plane completely destroyed.

Salaams to all C206 drivers.

Hi Goffel ,

No I have not been involved with the American jugde accident , then we haven't met but you might have met friends of mine as the pilot's world in Africa is very small...

Salut SenziRubani ,

No news from the Zambian crash , I don't know if they are OK . According to latest news they have been badly burned and they are in JNB hospital.

Who was the pilot of the 206 going to Liliondo ? Was it the Dutch chick or the Dutch guy ? , or someone eslse ? I know the place quite well and I must say We (as pilots) have to be very careful fly close to the mountains as the aerology is not familiar to everybody and can be very dangerous even with a very powerfull plane . Many years flying gliders in remote place in middle of big mountains in Europe gave me an idea of how it is dangerous .

I hope that the 2 people injured are going to be OK .

I will be back in the Simba world soon.

Hasta luego ,

Gusto

Salut Gusto,

It was the Dutch girl. I talked to her, she's okay, but still shaken. As you said, we all forget a little bit to quickly the strength of the wind on these mountains. Luckily they're all okay, with some injuries, but the plane is...in pieces.

Was in Dar early this week, saw your coucou in the hangar at Tanzanair. Still too hot down there.

A bientôt dans ces cieux,

Unhappy

Sad news !
RZL was my first partner in the air, we together went over
swamps, lacs, montains and his one engine always drove
me back home safely at the Goveia's farm.

I really hope no one is injured.
I've got no news from Lusaka about this, will keep you inform if any.

Hi Shenzi.

Hi Guys,

I've just spoken to the pilot, a good friend of mine, Yohan Minnar. He and the pax are in hospital in JHB. He got 30% burns, similar to the others who also had broken limbs. One pax has 90% burns. I wish them all a speedy recovery.

The incident happened at top of climb, from Royal to Lusaka. Similar to my own incident the engine changed note, and lost power. Oil pressure fell to zero and the engine seized quickly. The cabin filled with smoke as they turned back to Royal.

He managed to put to plane down in a very small field, however, the wings broke off after hitting some trees, and the aircraft was turned upside down. It caught fire almost immediately.

Everyone escaped, and the plane burnt out completely.

No SAR came, and they had to be driven to Lusaka. It was almost 8 hours before they received proper treatment in Lusaka.

Anyone who has flown in the Lower Zambezi will understand what a difficult area it can be if you have an engine failure. This should serve as a reminder to everyone who flies bush operation to keep safety in mind at all times.

I know Yohan is an excellent pilot, and he is keen to be back flying again as soon as possible.

This is still the best job in the world, so I hope everyone has a great season. Fly safe and have fun.

Cheers

JF

GUSTO, send me an email buddy, howz Tanz?
