Need advice on hawker job

Hello folks, I am from the US and have never done any intl flying besides Canada and the Bahamas. Got offered a job flying a Hawker out of Eteria. 2/1 rotation, UN contract. Don't know the first thing about Africa and I am deciding between this and another Hawker job I was offered in Beirut, Lebanon. Can anyone tell me what it will be like if I take the job in Africa. They said I need to write SA airlaw for my conversion. I haven't kept a logbook in years but have all my training records. Will that be a problem? What is the flying like and whats the reality of getting shot down? Thanks.

Hi T/C

Living in Dbj will be not what you are used to, Beirut would be a much nicer place to live or work, in africa especialy that area, you are a law unto yourselfs yes there was a lear that was shot down sometime ago. Depending on where you fly you will construct a lot of your own let down plates and you will scare the lving S--- out of yourself, if you are in BEI you will be in a much safer flying situation as most of the time you are under radar cnt.
I hope these few pointers are of some help.

Agreed. Asmara is, in my opinion, a real hole. Spent a bit of time there recently. Have you seen Mad Max? Looks like they made it in Eritrea. Most of the actors are gone but it looks the same. There's one decent hotel, I think it was an Intercon; the rest are dives. A few decent restaurants on Main Street - you can get a pizza & a decent bottle of red. But you'd run out of choices before the week was out. Hey, it wasn't that bad, I found an Internet Cafe. It was in some guy's lounge.

Now to the flying. I saw your aeroplane. It's a really old Hawker - an ex-SA Airforce 400 series I think. A real brick. The runway is at 7800 AMSL and is around 3000 meters (sorry don't do feet). In that brick I guess you'll use most of that strip. No radar, nearest alternate is a long way. And no, there is no Aviation Club. The Hawker is the only Western aircraft on the field. There's a bunch of MI-17's with the UN, a few An-24's and a bunch of MIg-29's left over from the war. Tensions seem to be down and I wasn't aware of any airspace restrictions between Ethiopia & Eritrea like there used to be.

If you need the job, go Beirut. Good luck.

Hawker job

What are the chances of getting killed at this place? I mean do you make up your own approaches? What about mx on the plane, do they skimp on that? And laslt getting shot down, what are the chance really? Those Mig 29's are just sitting there? Are they airworthy and can you go near them? Thanks.

Cool tomcat 21

I donīt think that you will be there in the right place. That part of the world may differ too much of your normal playground and rules even more. Just eenjoy your fully controlled aviation enviroment and live happily without any "risks"
