Angel Internet; e-mail and SMS in flight

South African Airways (SAA) passengers will soon be able to send SMSs on board and, from early next year, e-mail as well.

SAA communications manager Sarah Uys said the new Airbus A340-600 - two of the nine ordered have been delivered - have telephones installed with every seat.

Each seat has also been provided with a power point for laptop computers.

In April or May a short message service (SMS) facility will also be made available.

The new A340-300, with first deliveries scheduled for February 2004, will be equipped with these, e-mail and internet facilities.

British Airways announced in London on Tuesday that its passengers will now have in-flight internet and e-mail access.

We make use of email and text from the cockpit via the FMS and datalink - but the internet capability does not work as advertised - downlink speeds (via sat) are to slow and kick you off line

Kulula is doing very well-seems to be overbooked on a lot of their flights. Have been flying a lot of kulula pax on BA aircraft. Suppose it does not matter, since they belong to the same company. Rumour has it that kulula is looking at East London and George as possible routes, but it is still early days.
