Angel Is THIS what airfields are made 4 ?

While drag racing enthusiasts have until Friday to submit proposals to host a racing event in Durban's First Avenue over Easter, the speed freak behind the move to legalise the motorsport is eyeing the Virginia airstrip as a more permanent track.

Minority Front councillor Visvin Reddy said huge interest had been shown by drag racers to run an event at Easter after the municipality's executive committee sanctioned such an event.

The proposed racing would take place in First Avenue between Kolling Street and Epsom Road area.

'We are looking at various options and one site is Virginia Airport'
Reddy, who will take part in the Easter racing, said that while frequent drag racing took place at the Margate airstrip - attracting more than 20 000 spectators - the local Virginia Airport was ideally suited and should be considered as a more dedi-cated or permanent circuit.

"We are looking at various options and one site is Virginia Airport," he said.

Democratic Alliance councillor and member of the council's executive committee, Lyn Ploos van Amstel, said the First Avenue site would attract controversy and a permanent venue should be looked at as a priority to ensure that the sport become a tourism booster for the city.

"There will be teething problems to iron out, as in any new event. And while this has huge tourism potential, it will also take illegal speedsters off the streets in-to a controlled environment," Van Amstel said.

The newly formed non-profit KwaZulu-Natal Drag Racing Club says it has 150 cars on its books to start drag racing.

Spokesperson Ahmed Bassa said the club, which has the backing of the Motor Racing Club of South Africa, has received backing from a number of reputable organisations.

"We are the people who have staged drag racing at the Margate Airport for the last four years. We are the people who are known to be genuine, reliable and who make sure that our events are run according to rules and regulations set down by the Motor Club of South Africa.

"Our task has always been - and will continue to be - getting illegal drag racing off our streets," said Bassa.

Farhaad Khan, another drag racing stalwart, said they had tried to secure the Clairwood Race Track for drag racing, without success.

"For years we have been working with the city council. Imagine our delight when they eventually asked us for a suitable place at which to stage drag racing.

"With our constitution goes a code of conduct which rules out alcohol, drugs or any other substance. We have in place strict controls to make sure each driver is clean," said Khan.

This seems to be a regular occurence just check the amount of Notams you recieve stating that one airfield or another is closed for DRAG (queen) racing. The logical thing would be to build propper racing tracks and not interfere with civil aviation but why do that because its fun trying to explain to Oom Koos flying in from the farm in his bonnie and has never even seen an AIC checklist that he can't land at his chosen destination to go to the Vlooi mark for the day cause someone wants to race there car up the RWY.

Were'nt they using a strip at Bloemfontein for drag racing in the early '80s. Seem to remember this while on a visit there in '82.
