Sa Pilots In Mocambique Jail
Pretoria - Two South African pilots have been held in a maximum-security prison in Maputo, Mozambique, since November 14 on charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and attempted murder.
After nearly three months, Andries Pretorius and Michael Gamble still have not been asked to plead and have not appeared in court.
Nomfanelo Kota, spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs, said South African High Commission officials in Maputo have visited the two men and have given them consular advice and support where needed.
The men were confronted at Maputo Airport for allegedly carrying guns.
It is against the law to carry a firearm in Mozambique without a special permit. After the confrontation, the men were taken to a police station where an argument ensued.
The attempted murder charge apparently relates to this argument. The men are not allowed to receive any visitors apart from their Mozambiquan legal representatives and consular officials.
Kota said a Mozambiquan judge still had to consider the findings of the police investigation before deciding whether to prosecute the men.
In Mozambique, suspects are sometimes kept in prison for months until police investigation is completed. The first court appearance is scheduled once the judge has made a decision.
The men were working for a charter company flying that flew regular trips between South Africa and Mozambique, when they were arrested.
Jose Nascimento, a lawyer from Johannesburg who is familiar with Mozambican law, said the maximum sentence for the illegal possession of a firearm is 15 years.
He said it could take between three and six months before a suspect appeared in court for the first time.
Michael Gamble's brother Pat said negotiations for the release of the two men were at an advanced stage.
Kota said Foreign Affairs would continue to monitor the legal process and to support the two men.

I think thats where the term "Lets Roll" come in. A few years ago you would have a long line of guys ready to go bust their asses out of jail and feed them a Cold Brewski...... Over a stack of dead u-nos.
I may be a bit grey, but it still sounds like a fun option....

More news on pilots & da Silva
I heard yesterday that slippery da Silva is out of jail & is "somewhere " in SA.
The 2 pilot's face 10 years , but with the correct procedures
could be somehow be freed sometime .
Also the 2 LET's da Silva leased are still seized at Beira pending expensive hearings - not even the owner can access them.
Strange how the troubles of the lessee devolves upon the neck of the lessor/owner !
