SA Airports step up security

Cape Town - The Airports Company of South Africa is introducing heightened security measures at all airports during the holiday season, says MD Monhla Hlahla.
During the holiday season, Acsa expects more than 5.5 million passengers - coming and going - through it's network of airports.
Hlahla said: "Together with all our stakeholders, particularly the Police Service and various government agencies such as the Civil Aviation Authority, Acsa has put in place appropriate measures to safeguard the airport infrastructure and airport users.
"These measures will not interfere with flight schedules nor any other airport activity. However, passengers are advised to arrive early for their flights."
The airport industry worldwide has been stepping security since the September 11 terror attacks in the United States in 2001.
The terrorist attacks from the rightwing Boeremag in recent months also have meant a hightened security alert throughout South Africa.
Acsa says passengers flying to the United States are expected to arrive three hours before departure time; for other international flights it is two hours and people are expected to arrive an hour before departure for internal flights.
Points for all passengers (domestic, regional and international) to remember are:
You must have an acceptable, positive identity document (passport, RSA ID book or other state-issued photo identity document, police appointment certificate or national defence force identity document);
All electronic equipment like laptops, palmtops, cellphone and so forth, must be taken out of hand baggage and will be screened separately; and
Do not carry dangerous and prohibited items - they will be confiscated and destroyed.
Between January and November 2002, Acsa confiscated more than 38 000 prohibited items and about 3 300 dangerous substances.
"Our statistics also show that 37 firearms, 4 516 rounds of ammunition 64 magazines and 85 toys and replica guns were confiscated during the same period.
"These figures are high. We appeal to travellers to help us by complying with security standards," said Hlahla.
A detailed list of dangerous and prohibited items is placed at various positions at airports. It is also available on ACSA's website.
