Nairobi Wilson Runway Condition

Backtracking on Wilson's rwy 14 last week, I passed a large and deep pothole (maybe 12cm deep and 0.5m dia) with a substantial loose piece of rock lying next to it. It was on the right side of rwy 14 maybe 100m before 14's intersection with 07/25. Reported it, not aware of what action was taken. But not seen any NOTAMs referencing rwy repair.

For most small/medium a/c operating out of Wilson, I think it was big enough and nicely positioned to really spoil your day if you dropped a wheel into it while moving fast. Any locals know if this is typical?

Sadly all local operators are very familiar with the runway state. Potholes have been there for quite a few years now. Pilots know where and when to dodge these wheel breakers! Despite the fees charged at the airport it’s been sadly neglected for many years with little improvement or safety done. And there has been a sudden burst of big, heavy planes trying to operate out of an airport that was never designed for them. Imagine an international airport handling schedules, jets and Medevacs having NO SIDs or STARs or instrument approaches. Did you also note the state of the parking areas????

Not to mention that ATC assumes you know where Army Camp or The Monastery is, no matter what you tell them.....

It keeps all visiting or new pilots to Wilson on the ball and alert trying to find details/co-ordinates/location of the main approach fix to Wilson Airport (the busiest airport in the region) when it is not featured on ANY airport diagrams....

To help out anyone here looking however - Monastery co-ordinates are S01 20.66 and E036 45.12, and is a now hidden building in amongst everything else on a 4 nm final to 07 at Wilson. Two locations shown as it depends on which company you get the info from... but basically before the intersection of two main roads, before the shopping mall and turreted school.

Camp is half way between Monastery and the threshold of 07!

Haha. As others have said, you need to somehow learn the magical secret places Monastery, and Army Camp. Not to mention 'visual marker'! Monastery is now hard to see and apparently most use the shopping centre. It really is a crazy situation.

Yep. Having to lurch all over the place to avoid potholes and chasms in the taxiways. And then finding gridlock on the aprons as a bunch of venerable old Fokkers mess about in a very limited space.
