JamboJet

Jambojet, Kenya airways new LCC subsidiary started selling tickets today. One way start at 2850 (US$33) for domestic flights to Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret Kenya.

1st flight expected on the 1st of April.

They will operate a single class 737-300 fleet, initially starting with two aircrafts.

What are your thoughts on this?

Wish them all the best, and looking forward to the entry of FastJet to Kenya too.

1st flight expected on the 1st of April.
With no hint of irony, I'm sure.

Excellent news. With the right management JJ will give Fastjet a run for their money.

I assume all JJ pilots will come from K.A. I wonder if they will be paid more because they will be criss-crossing all over Kenya and East Africa in coming months.

Below is JJ Airfare breakdown..... Why are customers paying Kenya Railways fee of KES 100? and what's Domestic Uplift Fee?

1×Adult @ KES 2,850.
Breakdown per Adult
Fare KES 1,900.00
Domestic Uplift Fee KES 500.00
Kenya Railways Fee KES 100.00
Airport Handling Fee KES 350.00

I'm told the Pilots will be recruited through KQ, and the cabin crew will be provided by a third party. Reports indicate they already have 20 pilots, I guess it will be sort of like Flamingo, the failed Kq airline of the 90s..

Railway levy.... Didn't realise its also included there, but since the government came up with a plan to develop standard gauge railway that will go all the way to Rwanda, its been a behemoth, gulping money from every source it can get. All the imports to the country are now also charged Railway levy!!

seriously? How''s JJ operations related to Kenya Railways. What ever the Govt plans are they should pay for it on their own.

It doesn't add up or make senses!

Railway levy is imposed on all sorts of purchases nowadays (not only imported goods anymore it seems) that don't even have anything to do with railways. Guess everyone has to pay for that botched procurement process (or lack thereof?) now

Railyways fee for airfares

Absolutely Ridiculous! Joke of the day!

And the Domestic Uplift Fee of KES 500.00

What's that for?

sounds like any other typical LCC to me to be honest. I'm willing to bet any extras will cost an arm and a leg. For a basic ticket price though, $30 isn't too bad.

These are just skeletal fares..there will be much meat added to them as the day approaches..am sure there will be a myriaid of conditions.Late booking surcharges, Seat choice fee, luggage fees, meal charges, toilet usage fees(hehe!)..internet usage, mobile phone usage...etc etc

I find ity dubious that KA has planned to start this LCC with old bangers 733..yes they have pretty much depreciated and it doesn't cost them extra crew costs as they are all KA employees. Cost savings by KA not-with-standing the underlying premise for LCC economics is high Volumes of sales at low cost. This demands upwards of 11 hours per day in aircraft utilization!. Will the 733 cope with this demand in the long term without compromising despatch reliability?? I bet its a tempo interim solution just to ward off 540's escalation(they have extra CRJs panned to operate from around same time April fool's day)..and FastJet's expansion. Jambo Jet is used as "KQ" ngao(shield) against the predators like 540 and Fast....same dirty tricks were used to ward off the initial LCC that never took off..One Jet One

AA is worse than JJ

Okay guys, i take back what i said earlier on about JJ railways fees.

I come across below about AA. Customers will have to pay extra to get breathable air at altitude! The company is also planning to discontinue complimentary landing gear on flights under four hours.

Now this is absolutely MADDNESS!!!!

JJ's A/c's

To the best of my knowledge, K.A 737-300's were meant to be converted into freighter aircraft to complement the Boeing 747-400F service, jointly operated with KLM and Martinair Cargo. I think already 1 or 2 of the A/c's have been converted.

Don't know how JJ ended having the rest of them!

I was expecting it would come down to this! Better not eat or drink much before your flight..to avoid toilet charges! Will they sell tissue paper too? I bet there will be a surcharge for passenger weights above the nominal standard for male, female, infants, and alternative gendres

Greenfield Terminal

I think i may have know why JJ is charging it's customers Railways Fee. Greenfield is meant to have a railway terminal. Perhaps that's what the cost is for.

Tried booking and guess what, there is a fee of 500 shillings for the seat, and if you want extra leg room you pay 500 shillings. You are allowed 10 kg of hand luggage, anything above that and you pay 500 shillings for every 10 kg luggage.

Yeah, the guys really played some dirty tricks to forestall One jetone's entrance into kenya, I bet the same must have played a role in the delayed entrace of Fastjet

And my comments were just a hunch!!! If your views are credible mkenya...brace yourselves..we are in for a total shakeout of the airline industry in between Kenya and Tanzania.Sounds like the cold war has thawed..and the heat is on at full blast! Sit back, relax,...and enjoy the african star wars show!

The idea behind LCC is that you pay for the basic fare. You get more value from that. If you start paying for all the add-on they got e.g extra luggage etc then you are better off purchasing your ticket with the mainland airline. This is across all LCC around the world. Infact some LCC will charge you a fee if you check in at the airport. They want everything to be done online to reduce their operating costs. That's the only way they can stay profitable.

I think it will take some time before Kenyans get used to it. People should look at the positive side of it and embrace it.

I think sooner or later KCAA will have to give in and issue Fastjet a license to start operating from Kenya too. When this will happen, who knows. I guess it all depends with the politician of the day.
