Passenger jet with 30 on board suffers fire

The picture accompanying the story shows a large jet yet the Overland airlines site doesn't show that they own such an aircraft. I wonder what the real story was / is.

Overland Airlines bound for Ibadan in Nigeria

Passenger jet with 30 on board burst in flames

Feb 09, 2014

An aircraft belonging to Overland Airlines bound for Ibadan in Nigeria burst into flames at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, with more than 30 Passengers including Senator Kamoru Adedibu -- son of late godfather of Ibadan politics, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu.

Overland Airways is an airline based in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. It operates domestic services from Lagos and Ibadan. Its main base is Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, with a hub at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The plane burst into flames shortly before take off leaving passengers escaping for safety on Friday as the plane narrowly averted a crash.

The plane owned by Overland Airlines, was Ibadan-bound and was primed to depart Abuja at 4:52pm when one of its engines began emitting smoke, forcing officials of the airline to hurriedly evacuate the passengers.

Daily Times in Nigeria first broke the news of the near crash on Friday with officials of the airline declining to comment on the issue.

Some passengers disclosed that they noticed the engineers fiddling with the engine of the plane moments before take off before the plane burst into flames forcing everyone to scamper for safety.
Adedibu himself expressed shock at the near-tragedy, but thanked God that it happened pre-take-off rather than mid- air.

He also praised the pilot, the crew and airport officials for their vigilance, without which they would neither have spotted the smouldering engines nor initiated the rescue operation.

apparently there was no fire. Just a lunatic who was denied exit from the plane after doors were closed decided to trip the fire alarm in order to get off the plane.

OVERLAND AIRWAYS PRESS RELEASE

10 February 2014

Dear Customers, Bankers, Insurers, Suppliers, Stakeholders of Overland Airways and the General Public.

We draw your attention to recent false and defamatory media reports about Overland Airways, purporting there was fire on board one of our aircraft, specifically, flight OLA 1175 from Abuja to Ibadan in the afternoon of Friday, 07 February 2014.

We hereby make a solemn and truthful declaration that "there was no smoke and no fire on board any of our Aircraft" on that day or any day ever since the beginning of our operations in 2002". We challenge anybody to prove otherwise. In addition we pray that there will never be fire, accident or adversity on board our aircraft or any other aircraft in our great country Nigeria. May all your journeys be compliant with the three P's of Overland: Peaceful, Pleasant and Positive.

THE FACTS

On Friday, 07 February 2014, 59 Passengers reported for our Flight OLA 1175 scheduled for 1600 hours. The flight operated with our ATR 72 aircraft experienced a 30 minute delay, due to passenger baggage discrepancy which was eventually resolved, as well as a final technical check which was procedural. During taxi to the Holding point, one female passenger unusually demanded to disembark from the Aircraft and she was counselled by the crew that it was against conventional security practice to permit her disembark after departure from the gate.

The Aircraft continued to taxi while the Cabin was prepared for take-off. However at the Runway threshold, another passenger suddenly raised a false alarm of Smoke!! Fire! Fire!! The Cabin crew immediately carried out a check and confirmed that it was a false alarm as there was no smoke or fire. However, the mischief of this passenger rapidly deteriorated into a stampede. The other passengers overpowered the crew and wilfully opened the Emergency exits, and started jumping out of the Aircraft thereby putting themselves at jeopardy against all contrary advice and lawful instruction from the crew. The Pilot skillfully responded to their chaos by cutting power to the Engines and prevented severe propeller blade injuries or Aircraft tyre overrun injuries. It must be noted that at no time or occasion did our crew open the Emergency Exits as alleged by the media. All Emergency Exit openings were performed by the passengers who had overpowered the crew and thereby grossly violated Civil Aviation Regulations.

Upon completion of this unlawful evacuation, passengers realized the folly of the action as there was no smoke, fire, or adversity of any sort. There were even no fire fighters invited to the scene of the incidence. It was a "crying-wolf" that led to the stampede. Passengers therefore became apologetic and the airline still demonstrated good faith and flew 32 of the passengers to Ibadan on a sister-ship later that night. This show of confidence by the passengers is a clear vindication of our Airline and confirmation of the fact that there was no smoke and no fire.

Furthermore, considering the number of smart phones and cameras available to Millions of Nigerians, it is strange that no-one has posted any photograph of the smoke or engine on fire. Indeed, there was no fire as this same Aircraft was cleared by the Control Tower to re-start engines and taxi under its own power back to the parking Apron where we submitted for inspection by the Authorities.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had a duty to enlighten the travelling public on the provisions of sections 8.9.1.1 and 8.9.2.1 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (NCAR) which forbids interference, careless talk and violation of lawful instructions given by the Flight crew members to Passenger(s) during a flight operation as quoted below:

"Section 8.9.1 ALL PASSENGER CARRYING OPERATIONS

8.9.1.1 Unacceptable conduct

a. No person on board may interfere with a crew member in the performance of his or her duties.

b. Each passenger shall fasten his or her seatbelt and keep it fastened while the seatbelt sign is lighted.

c. No person on board an aircraft shall recklessly or negligently act or omit to act in such a manner as to endanger the aircraft or persons and property therein

Section 8.9.2 COMMERCIAL AIR TRANSPORT PASSENGER CARRYING OPERATIONS

8.9.2.1 Passenger Compliance with Instructions

a. Each passenger on a commercial air transport flight shall comply with instructions given by a crew member in compliance with this section."

The Security agencies also reviewed the situation to determine if any act of terrorism was involved? Who was the target of this assault? Were the parties who wished to abort the flight acting in concert? What was in their luggage that they were afraid to fly?

As for the motive of the perpetrators of this event, we, the Airline will continue our investigation with a view to eliminate sabotage, commercial rivalry and de-marketing.

After rigorous inspection and testing spanning Friday and Saturday, the Authorities found no fault with the Aircraft or Airline procedure and the Aircraft was cleared and flown back to Lagos at 3pm on Saturday 08 Feb 2014. It arrived safely in Lagos and has since returned to service.

Dear Stakeholders, to our shock and disappointment, we have read various misrepresentations of this event and are concerned at recklessness of some members of the Licensed Press and Social media. It is in the overall interest of the Aviation Industry and the Nation if the Press refrains from fear-mongering, especially as it relates to air travel.

The Punch Newspaper of 08 February 2014 published on its front page "IBADAN - BOUND PASSENGERS ESCAPE DEATH AS PLANE CATCHES FIRE". We posit that this falsehood is indicative of unprofessional and irresponsible journalism and needs to be retracted. It was an insult to the intelligence of all Nigerians to have told that lie for financial gain or advantage over other publications in the same market.

Overland Airways was established in 2002. We were the first airline that restored airline services between Ibadan and Abuja in year 2003 since the collapse of Nigeria Airways. We have since developed several in-land routes in Nigeria with our intelligent right-sizing approach to grow the travel business. We started in Ibadan with 18-seater aircraft financed by the US Exim bank and moved over the past twelve years to 70-seater Aircraft financed by Access Bank Plc., Nigeria.

In recognition of our contribution to nation building, Overland Airways is a proud awardee of the National Productivity Order of Merit Award (NPOM). Overland Airways operates the strictest standards of Safety and we strive to maintain an impeccable safety record. We use this opportunity to announce our arrival on the Lagos - Abuja and Port Harcourt routes from April 2014 with our Boeing 737 Aircraft.

We look forward to receiving you on board Overland Airways.

Signed : Management OVERLAND AIRWAYS LTD, (NPOM).
