Prevalence of ModeS among African carriers

For situational awareness and diversion my home office mounts a Radarbox ModeS receiver and an aviation radio--my backup handheld. I’ve noticed that occasionally I hear a commercial aircraft approach to FCBB, see it, hear the crew call six mile final, see the aircraft descending, but then it never shows up in the Radarbox log.

Tonight the penny dropped...duhh...was watching/monitoring Camairco 351 drop into Brazza, but no ModeS. A number of carriers here simply aren’t equipped with ModeS! Right?

Given that my silly little experimental is ModeS, should I find the absence of ModeS on 7xx aircraft flying internationally striking?

You may also be suffering from doghnut effect when A/Cs are very close to the receiver that they overload it with signals
