Nigeria: Ab-initio Professional Pilot Advice.

Hello,

Future airline pilot seeking help and advice here.

I've conducted extensive research into my dream of having "my office in the sky" and I believe myself to have the determination and focus to accomplish said dream but it all boils down to one thing, the funds. Not that I hope to find them here but I need advice from you professional pilots as to where I could obtain such funds.

I have applied to several NGOs, my state government, and a few airlines and I've not received a reply from any in months.

I am in dire need of your help as to what to do next.

Either if you can you go the military way and if succesfull you get trained and paid at same time.... Or you go the civilian way and if you have no funds, you should change your "dreams"

Aye, I've considered joining the military but since I reside in Lagos, I do not have any idea where to get the application form for NDA other than in Zaria which is hundreds of miles away. Heck, I dont even know the time of year when the forms are usually available. They have a pretty unreliable website.

Changing your dreams? You make it sound so easy. Do you even know how that sound when you say it?

Not telling you to let go of your dreams. But if finding a form even though a hundred miles away (which i am sure is not the case) is difficult; the rest will just be impossible.

Military is a potential option.

My suggestion would be to make sure you get an education (degree), so you have that box checkmarked.

In the meantime, maybe go to one of the local airlines, let them know your intentions - and start on the ground and work your way up. Get to know the players involved, demonstrate your work ethic, learn something about the business. You can also study numerous flying related topics, aerodynamics, weather, your NCAR's (I think that's what you call them there - your regulations) etc etc etc.

Much of flying is about overcoming obstacles - it's a never ending part of the job. Your facing the very early stages of obstacles - what will you do to overcome them?

Best wishes

I need advice from you professional pilots as to where I could obtain such funds.

Most pilots I know including myself worked our way through school. Some took loans, some had family that helped and some were just fortunate. In my opinion if you really want this these are your options:

1) Find out if any Nigerian airline offers sponsorship/cadet program of any kind or will in the future.
2) Join the military. you will be out in time to fly commercial with some valuable experience.
3) You are young. Find a way to finish your education and work while saving money for school and start reading up on aviation subjects. The more you know the less money you will spend.

When it comes to funds I am afraid you wont find a magical solution here. We all had to deal with it in our own ways.
PS I am still paying off my student loans.

I appreciate all your input.

You just don't get NDA forms at any nearby barracks. You just don't. I'm currently in my first year studying for a Bachelors Degree in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Benin, Edo-state and I'm being sponsored by a father who has 4 other children to cater for. Every Nigerian who went to public universities knows that it is not easy to write JAMB/UTME (NDA requires this) and instantly gain admission into tertiary institutions (NDA is acknowledged as one). I had a bit of luck and with God's help, I gained admission immediately after leaving secondary school. I initially planned on going to NCAT (the national aviation college) but my lack of funds made me reconsider.

Joining the military has never been such an obstacle as I painted it in my previous posts but the question now is: should I stay put in school or should I risk re-writing (and possibly re-writing) JAMB again?

@Aim-to-fly:
Please can you tell me how you managed to come about such a loan?

It's a student loan I took back in US. I don't know what the system is for getting loans in Nigeria. I was speaking on a general note.

@MML - Thanx man . Blue side up..

try Nigerian college of aviaiton

Try get Ncat form for any course relating to aviation.. like FOOB or FOOA.. flight dispatch course.. that will bring you into Nigerian aviation environment faster.. having a job with the local airlines as a dispatcher, will provide insider info on when they are hiring or sponsoring people. eg Bristow helicopters.... then work your way up... I have met many Nigerian who followed that path.. and are flying high now in the airspace...
Good luck

MY TWO CENTS

1. Get your degree from UNIBEN....it will come in handy anyways
2. Apply for pilot cadet programmes with airlines
3. Apply for direct short service into the Airforce
if you are lucky you will get in and get trained by the Airforce(this is where your university degree comes in handy)

All this you can do before you are 25 if ASUU doesnt strike again.
Most importantly stay focused and don't give up as if you want something so bad you will go to the end of the world to get it.
Remember any obstacle you meet along the line should be taken in good faith and treated as a blessing as things could be much more worse e.g you could have been on the Dana or associated flight.
N.B =, BE THE CAPTAIN OF YOUR LIFE

Cheers
