11 BA planes grounded

11 BA planes grounded | Fin24

"Johannesburg - Eleven aircraft of British Airways (BA) have been flying with components that should have been replaced in August last year.

Rapport reported on Sunday that the Civil Aviation Authority ordered on Friday that these 11 Comair aircraft, the company that operates BA flights, as well as those of Kulula in South Africa, could not leave the apron before the components had been replaced.

The CAA report said that if the components in question, known as the spindle, cracked or was damaged in any way, it could lead to the pilot losing control over the aircraft.

Just five of these BA aircraft – the older Boeing 737-400s and Boeing 737-300s, had been scheduled to fly on Saturday.............etc etc etc"

The dangers of a franchise - when I saw the title I assumed that it referred to BA mainline. Mind you if you had referred to Comair in the title I would have thought of a Delta franchise. But if there is a problem at a franchise McDonalds its a problem for McDonalds.

I should apologise to anyone in SA if my initial reaction offends them, of course its a serious situation and I don't want to be parochial.

Just so lots of people don't get worried/excited/ whatever then the headline title should surely read "South African BA franchisee Comair etc etc.........."

Without any thought for the possible consequences, presumably...

BA have never worried about public perception of the activities of its African franchise carriers.

If you want to lend your good(?) name (Airbus cowlings notwithstanding) to some dodgy company because it (assumedly) benefits you financially in some way . . .don't come crying when they drag your name through the mud.

Fair do's , no ?

to some dodgy company
You may want to do a little research before sprouting

The most consistantly profitable airline in the world "Dodgy"

Comair Limited is a leading South African aviation company that is listed on the Johannesburg Stock exchange (JSE:COM).

The company has for the past twelve years operated the local and regional Southern African British Airways airline and destinations from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg include Mauritius, Livingstone, Harare, Victoria Falls and Windhoek.

Comair also operates Africa’s first low fare airline, kulula.com. This quirky brand has since inception revolutionalised air travel in South Africa by making flying much easier and affordable to customers.

Launched in 1946 Comair has made global aviation history by having posted 62 years of operating profit; an aviation record that is held by no other airline.
..
Just a note that South African Airways Technical are responcible for these aircraft, in terms of maintance and record keeping. Interesting that SAA's 2 B737 Classic Frieghters are also grounded till part replaced. Will wait and see if Comair seek recourse from SAAT.

I'd say two little freighters grounded is a small collateral price to pay for being able to ground 11 of the opposition....

Or should I remove my tinfoil hat now?

Comair have a separate spares inventory to the rest of SAAT (within the same hangar) . Comair source their own spares.

If the part in question ain't there it's not SAA Technicals fault.

Greetings Mr.Rider. Long time no hear.

...the lack of recent SAA scandals that you need to defend your masters from seems to be making a stranger out of you in these parts.

You should pop by more often! It's been so quiet around here.

Seeya.

Spindles.

Possibly the outboard flap carriage spindles which have a tendency to crack.

I just read on another board that the items in question were both hour and calendar limited, and that SAA's maintenance department was only tracking them based on hours. When an audit was done this past weekend, the mistake was found.
Not a case of the parts not being available, or mechanics not doing their jobs, but a clerical error somewhere.
Of course, the press wouldn't report something like that, rather they'd make it sound like the entire BA fleet was in danger of dropping out of the sky because of shoddy maintenance.
