Anyone using the Ipad in the cockpit for Approach Plates/planning/ect? What program (application)do you run, or use, for navigation, calcutlations, weather, letdown plates? Any info would be much appreciated!

Ipad in the cockpit

Although not cleared in mil ac yet, students on the British army pilot cse are issued iPads that contain all the relevant doc/pubs for ref during flt planning.
Once airborne they must use paper docs.

iPad in the cockpit

Been using the iPad with the Jepps for all approaches during last 12 months, works very well and we have had no major hiccups once we got used of the thing.

Thanx guys! Do you fly with your co-pilot holding the tablet or do they come with a bracket (the ipad, not the co-pilot ) How often do you have to update the application to get up-to-date approach plates? Can you connect the Ipad to the GPS to give you real time tracking?

You still need hard copy Jepps (paper plates) on board I believe.

Using jepp on iPad but keep all paper copies at hand. The jepp app on iPad is very good and easy to use.

Cool iPad

We do the briefings then put the IPads on the side panels, we have got charging facilities on both sides of the cockpit, we get amendments coming in at fairly regular intervals, haven't really paid much attention as to how often they arrive, very simple and pretty quick to do the updates....considering the sorry state of our Internet.
Yup, real happy with the system...we can use the Bad Elf for track following, but with two FMS's and a separate GPS can't be bothered.

New Jeppview on Ipad provides now basic weather at major airports around the world, and provides a handy marker, to highlight important bits on the charts.

I also use Aeroweather for the TAF's and METAR's.

LogTen Pro for my logbook.

And all my SOP, COM, MEL are in iBooks.

So at least when I have finished for the day, I dont have any loose ends to tie off when I get home

Great. Thanks guys! After a bit of research, Jepp seems to offer the best value for money. Ipads, check. Contact Jepp for sofware, pending....

iPad's (even better the iPad mini!) with Jepp subscription. Updates at least every 28 days. We'r using it as the backup charts for our onboard e-charts - screw the paper charts (besides from the enroute charts and "fold out" terminal charts!

I prefer Goodreader before the iBooks app - just because its easier for updates and also, making notes is not that good with iBooks as with Goodreader.

Good luck with your choice!

yeah, but charts for Africa?

I've just purchased Foreflight, which is brilliant for the US, but the charts for central Africa are really bare--nothing more than province names and airports and some rivers. Am I missing something? I use Skyvector, and have an eight inch stack of ONCs and TPCs, but unless I'm missing something VFR piloting in Africa doesn't have any ipad app to support it.

ForeFlight is amazing, but unfortunately you're not missing anything, indaloamman, it's only for Canada and the US right now. (You are just seeing the basic "world map" for Africa, and while you can still use it for rough flight planning, they still have a ways to go, obviously.) Our company uses ForeFlight exclusively in North America but must resort to JeppFD when working throughout the rest of the world.

We are pretty much completely paperless (each pilot has an iPad issued to them, with ram mounts/knee boards in the cockpits, as well as accessible charging ports.) We use GoodReader and keep all company docs updated via an FTP server and it works incredibly well. Now just hoping ForeFlight is able to expand into the rest of the world so we can use it for all of our operations!
