Nigeria CAA orders airlines to instal AFIRS

Doctor Harold Demuren, Director General of the Nigerian CAA at the commencement of operations by new operator MedView Airlines, announced that it will be mandatory for every airline operating in Nigeria to be fitted with an automated flight information reporting system.

Dana airlines, already announced that last month that it has signed a five-year contract with FLYHT Aerospace Solutions Ltd. for its automated information reporting system (AFIRS) 228 at an estimated 1M USD.

The contract requires FLYHT to install the AFIRS 228 on all the five Boeing MD-83 aircrafts in Dana Air’s fleet to provide real-time flight data monitoring and to assist in achieving maintenance and operational efficiencies. The airline will benefit from all AFIRS 228 features including automated Out, Off, On and In times, engine trending, airframe and engine exceedances, flight tracking and satellite voice communications.

Whilst this can be seen as a positive move and an advancement in aviation safety in Nigeria, many will be aghast at the statement made by Doctor Demuren:
'The new device will record everything that happens to an aircraft during flight. If there is engine failure, it will record it; if there is excessive temperature, it will record it. If there is excessive vibration, it will record it.

“All airlines will be required to fix this on board their aircraft. The control centre will be at the NCAA, where we will be seeing everything. This is a good development in our airspace,”

NCAA muppet........

.......there's a sucker born, every minute !!!

Great, Demuren and his NCAA advisors managed to take the biscuit, again !

Guess the time is ripe, to stop this absolute nonsense, I cannot believe that so much incompetence does not render oneself liable to prosecution.

Looks like another fraud, where certain NCAA official's may expect some kick backs from FLYHT Aerospace Solutions Ltd (AFIRS producer) !!!

There is no point to spend millions of dollars in equipment which provides real time streaming of black box data, not having the infrastructure nor the professional staff, able to analyse related data.

So what is the huge benefit, of having real time data in case of an accident/incident ?, well I do not have to bother to find and analyse the CVR/FDR, but does it prevent any accidents, or does it make Aviation in Nigeria any safer?

Anyway, if these muppets are so keen to get involved in things, they do not have any clue about,
they should rather collect information from the equipment, already installed in almost all comercial aircrafts, like QAR or FDR downlink via ACARS (VHF 3) and double check video boroscope file's from all in service aircrafts !!!

Never underestimate the predictability of reckless stupidity

Things continue to fall apart...

Oh dear me....AFIRS. Why I'm I surprised, this is a fellow who could pull of a certificate from the FAA recognizing us as category 1.

FAA International Aviation Safety Assessment scheme (IASA)

IASA is the FAA's international monitoring programme which it uses to measure whether any particular country complies with ICAO standards.

If a country complies with ICAO, it is classified Category 1. If not, it's Category 2.

Since then the sky was the limit for this guy and his band of brothers.

Oh well at least i can call my wife now to let her know I'll be home late again. Just laughable but then extremely sad.

Can someone confirm if the landing lights at DNMM 18L are now up and running after nearly 4yrs.......

What Next?

and the readability of ATC transmissions in certain areas is strength one if readable at all! not to mention the standard of some ATC's! Rather sort this out before a midair happens!

I totally agree. NCAA is talking about a system that they know nothing about when they should be concentrating on simple things like proper ATC communication and proper oversight of the airlines. All fluff and bluff bull**** I think. Welcome to naija.

TEA Party and Foreign Jaunts

Never mind, whilst the DG and his top cronies are busy watching the airspace movies in their 'control centre', the Tea lady and possibly the cleaner will assume the duties of signing out crew licences.

Now, my question is who would be left to go on the numerous pointless foreign JAUNTS they always insist on attending; all at the expense of the local airlines? Surely, the NCAA ain't good at multi-tasking, no???
