15yr aircraft age limit:a ruse for Jonathan & Stella
Forget the Nigerian government's "concern over air safety" nonsense.
The 15-year age limit proposed for commercial aircraft in Nigeria, is meant to drive as many carriers as possible out of its skies, to create room for the planned new "national carrier".
The new entity is planned to be "private sector driven" with some government equity participation, but when it is remembered that Nigerian leaders always buy up public property by a variety of inventive means, it becomes clear what their new-found love for (public) air safety is: these people only mean to corner the new airline, by which I mean the Prez and his Aviation Minister, no less.
This is no arena to list the public companies, real estate, and assets of all manner and description which have, especially since the Babangida years, wound up in the hands of our leaders and their foreign cronies. Just ask any fairly knowledgeable Nigerian, and he'll reel off names and dates for you.
The tragedy of it all is that nobody's mustering the balls to remind the Aviation Minister that she above all else in the land is best placed to teach the public that when it comes to safety, it's not the age of the equipment that counts, it's that they are maintained according to the books.
As it is, the Minister and her boss are just taking advantage of the gullibility of the public as bruised from the Dana Air tragedy.
And the joke of it all is that Madam Stella's leading the way
