MysteryAircraft

Not sure what is in the water in the Horn of Africa at the moment, but there are some strange airborne goings on....

Apparently an NGO aircraft had a near miss with a stealth Antonov (now those are two words that don't often get used in the same phrase) somewhere over Somalia. No official report on it, and no identity of the mystery aircraft, who operated it, where it was going or anything. That's mystery No 1.

Then there's the shot caravan whose identity never was revealed.

And a rumour of a downed C206 in Kenya that no-one knows anything about.

And a tourist airstrip that has claimed its second almost identical engine failure/runway excursion of a Let410.

Guess its sunspot activity or UFO interference.....

There has / will be an Antanov carrying drilling equipment into Dharoor Valley (East of Bosaso) for a while. Later will move a little south to Nugaal Valley.

And the fact that they are flying with a roofrack makes it look like a stealth edition...

stealth antonov

a near miss with a stealth Antonov
Didn't show on radar.. didn't show on TCAS...couldn't be spotted with the naked eye...
But there was a huge trail of oily black smoke streaking through the sky with nothing at the front of it

All Russians are in stealth mode. They're either operating without a flight plan, have had their registrations cancelled, are not airworthy, are overweight, flying contraband or mercenaries or simply don't care. They probably filed a flight plan to somewhere in the S. Sudan and then flew into Somalia. Nothing new...Welcome to Africa, where airplanes come to die and drunken Ukrainians can fly. Pulakov!!!

Okay so that kind of explains the UFD (unidentified flying dinosaur) but what about the C206, shot C208 etc. There's more happening in this neck of the woods than ever gets to the gossip mill, or even the bar-rooms.

There is a lot happening up there right now plus alot of security as well. Plus has been sheet-loads happening all over Somalia past 18 months without any reporting. Blackhawks doing covert raids to eliminate world No.3 terrorist that never hit the news etc. Down south Kenya security is now patrolling using GA. US using drones. Up north however is all about security provided by Puntland military for a drilling operation. Expect a US presence behind the scenes.

Sorry Foxcotte, I missed that. I believe the Kenyan military (read CIA support) is using Cessna a/c and overflying Somalia in joint effort with AMISOM to eradicate Alshebab.

Thanks Rat Catcher. Apologies anycall. I was about to say that you'd be hard pressed to find a tourist strip in Somalia. BTW you might want to stay clear of the Dharoor Valley around Darin too.

Lots of UK dignitairies (foreign minister Haigh et al) flying around Somalia this past week or two, hot on the heels of some US types.

Foxcotte, best be cautious in airspace around Bari region now. Down south a few days ago US drones successfully targeted 4 Al Shabaab. Up in Bari security is on high alert to neutralise a chap called Sheikh Atom and his militia who declared their allegiance this week to Al Shabaab and have threatened some local mischief.
