Cathay Pacific

Hi Guys,

If this is the wrong section please delete or move it........

I received an email saying I qualify for the Second Officer Initial Selection in Johannesburg.

It does state I have to reply to the email.

Which I did and it bounced back, so I replied to the email it was sent from.

I did try to phone the number given but it goes to voice mail for another person than the person in the email.

Has anyone else in South Africa had the same problem??

You forgot to pay the selection fee and send your bank and identity details.

If you're dumb enough to take their present offer then you're just the kind of candidate they're looking for! Bring SRT along too!

In plain English...

They are trying to tell you that it is a cruel trick.

Cathay Pacific is an airline that is based in Hong Kong, so that, as far as I know, they do not any interviews in South Africa. That would be like someone in Hong Kong being asked to show up there or thereabouts for an interview for SAA, wouldn't it?

I could tell you more about the tricks that are played in aviation but I have no time right now! I am terribly busy trying to sell an Aero Commander 690B to a teenager....

Errrr ... did you apply for the position?

What email was given : [email protected] perhaps? Or [email protected]?

I'll bet the email is full of spelling and grammatical errors!

Was the phone number : + 27 8x xxx xxxx or + 27 7x xxx xxxx - cellphone numbers. If it's genuine and they are recruiting in SA - which is possible but as pointed out not very likely - they will have + 27 11 numbers (Johannesburg landlines).

see this for an example :

Hey FAKO, Cathay Pacific does interview in Johannesburg for second officer position from time to time. Although they will not cold call you, so unless you have applied directly to them in Hong Kong I think this could be a scam.

CX are not offering expat terms any more, and all employment is on local conditions

It baffles me to the stupidity of people here.
Try contact their HR department in Hong Kong with regards to this.
Fako130, Cathay DO the 1st part of their interview process all over the world.
This interview is the technical exam and a short chat with a few senior Cathay staff, if you pass this phase you then go over to Hong Kong for their 2nd interview and so on.
And yes their expat package has ceased for now, so you do not get a lot of the previous benefits, but come on, would you rather work for a local mickey mouse airline in South Africa flying aircraft that are falling apart, or one of the worlds leading airlines, flying the most modern and well maintained fleet ever. Ill leave the choice to you.
A word of advice, prepare for this interview, it is one of the hardest on the planet, if you want to fly for the best airline you need to be the best! Good luck.

Fako130...I am going to direct you to fragrant harbour wannabes...the thread dealing with this VERY sensitive topic on PPRuNe. Read with caution though. You poor soul, its going to shatter your dreams

And good luck contacting CX HR department! Mr. Michaelbarnes I dare you to do the same and have a stab at those boys on that thread with your ideas of CX That should be a laugh...Im assuming you live in RSA so if the airlines (and RSA) are that bad and you can get into CX go for it...I think your stupidity shines through in that post so WELCOME TO THE CLUB!

And which airline would that be, michaelbarns Can you put your money where your mouth is?

We know an engine fell off a Nationwide 'plane a few years ago, and there were concerns over their maintenance, but in general the standard of all South African airlines is good.

Aren't all airlines in South Africa, excluding of course the mighty Spoories' cockpit crews, Mickey Mouse?
The Nationwide debacle was in 2007. Since then there have been innumerable incidents linked to one airline in particular. It would seem that this company has successfully seen off its CAA appointed invigilator and it is true that for a year or so now, its aircraft and passengers have tootled around the sky unscathed, so maybe some good came from all those underruns, overruns, crashes or whatever they were. So yes indeed, in general and at this precise moment, the general standard of South African airlines probably is good and it's possibly true, although it might not be a consolation, to say that aviation safety is darker in the Congo than in jolly old South Africa.

I suppose you could say they are 'mickey mouse' relative to the worlds airlines yes...but what barns is saying is that to work for a SA airline is almost a disgrace and the aircraft are falling apart! Well thats a load of crap The standard of SA airlines is actually very good...

What said airline with overruns etc would you be referring to CC Their planes may be fine now but their crew are certainly not a happy bunch of campers!

As for Cathay Pacific, it's rumoured to be the hardest and most gruesome interview out there. Some years ago, apparently, a group of senior CP captains got together and produced the fore runner of this book.
Cathay Interview - Preparing for your Cathay Pacific Interview
As far as I remember, it originally had a green cover, which pretty much describes how one felt after the inquisition had finished with the testicular area of the prospective acolyte. That of course was before the Australians dominated the recruitment scene and the well deserved anti British bias manifested itself.
These days, being otherwise preoccupied than with smallish jets, I've lost track of the local bias but I'm absolutely certain that it's still there and it would be most useful to have a handle on it before any interview, wouldn't it now?

I do believe that there was an interview with the foster parent in the November
World Airnews. Vol 39. No 9. In the profile he says that the airline is built on values, the glue of which is its people and the reason being satisfying the customers. That's nice! I shouldn't think though that a flight track record with that company will do one too much good with the Tai Pans at One Pacific Place.
Company ethos counts for a great deal in the orient.

fako130 - The CX crew are due to visit RSA in December again....
They need (more) quality trained pilots from the SA pool!
