Capetonian/Trossie,
You are both completely right, and having re read my post I have edited it accordingly....
As I said, my point was not that the raid was unjustified, it most certainly was. My only point was that HAD the ZAF got airborne the raid may not have been as successful as it was. It is my opinion, however, that KK was quite happy to let the Rhodesians have at the base, and so chose to let the mission go on unopposed. It is just irritating to listen to "Rhodesians" for the last 30 odd years harp on about how useless the Zambians are, etc, when in fact the raid was the success it was largely because Zambia let it go ahead.
And as an aside, having lived in Zambia for close on 30 years and listened to countless Zimbos....sorry, Rhodesians.....tell us how useless Zambia is and how amazing Zimbab.....sorry, Rhodesia......is, it's funny to see how many of them now live and seek refuge in Zambia! Boy, did THAT table turn!!!

The Wraith, we can argue all night about African armies that could have been. The fact remains that they, like many others did nothing and today have nothing to show for doing, well nothing. Let's make a pact? If you can get the "African American" to stop complaining about the slave trade from more then 100 years back, then the Zimbo's will stop reminding you about the 30 year ago Utopia.

Mig 21
There were no Mig 21 aircraft in the ZAF inventory at that time. Mig 19, Galeb, Jastreb, and MB 326 were fighter aircraft on the ground that day.
There were no aircraft in quick reaction positions to respond to the well executed attack, and positioning of CAP aircraft overhead Mumbwa. They were totally surprised and ill prepared.
I was hoping those guys would make a move down there, but fortunately for them, and the ZAF, they did not.
