AIDS for Aircraft ...
I was cruising around Lanseria and had a revelation....
La Nationale, Gabon, seems to have put more aircraft to their graves at Lanseria than any other West African operator.
Currently dead and dying at FALA
Am I missing something here? is it the operator or the owners ?

Probably a bit of both. After the owner hasn't been paid by the Operator they then ground the aeroplane. The Operator then holds the aircraft for ransom, based on some "debt" that the owner must now settle with the Operator. And so the fight starts.
By the time the owner finally gets the aeroplane back to SA its been grounded for months, has mould growing on the carpets, half the avionics have been stolen, he had to pay a the thieving operator his ransom, had to pay the Bank/Insurance/Etc for months, had to pay parking fees etc, and, and, and......
Needless to say this is enough to push many to bankrupcy.
The real mystery is why new aircraft owners follow in the footsteps. I believe Sahara will be the next crowd to lose their shirts in this west African paradise.

Pretty difficult for foreign investors to setup in Gabon, almost everything is run by the presidential family and they can just close you down with a click of the fingers. Don't know if that is the reason for Nationale but it wouldn't surprise me.
I remember landing fees going from $20 to almost $1000 for my aircraft depending on the person in the little window on that day.
Its that kind of place and probably the worst country in Africa I've ever visited.
