Arik Air grounded in Dakar?
I landed in Dakar this evening at around 6pm and saw an Arik Air B737-700 parked up on the apron with no activity around it. My ground engineer later told me they were grounded because of unpaid fees. Can anyone confirm this?
Not trying to stir, just want to verify the story.

Arik Air (arikair.com) is Nigeria’s largest domestic airline and operates a fleet of 23 state-of-the art regional, medium haul and long haul aircraft.
Arik planes have been grounded many, many times for lack of various payments. Business as usual.
I can't even believe that Emirates would associate themselves in any way with Arik, but I guess they think they'll make a couple of dollars. I would think that many of the passengers flying on Emirates from LOS already flew on Arik to get to LOS. Not much will change.

As far as i know they have not operated one flight into Dakar for 48hrs. One of their B737-700's is still sitting chocked on J2 on the main apron. That might change today. Lets hope so for the passengers.

Surely not,the govt did not give ARIK AIR a dime.AMCOM(asset management company of nigeria) bought most of the non-performing loans off the banks.
So they are now indebted to AMCOM,who may have given them a bit of leeway, thereby not committing all income to overdrawn bank accounts, which theoretically improves cash flow temporarily.
Now its what AMCOM will do with management,is the big question.

So a Google search for Amcom of Nigeria suggests that the board is made up of government selected appointees, and the government has a major say in how it runs, who it deals with etc etc
So whilst it might not be a loan from the Govt. directly it sure looks as if it is an indirect loan from the Govt.

Correct, however AMCOM has bought over bad loans from some banks that were walking the tight rope, after overexposure in various areas of the economy, ranging from oil and gas(mostly) to our beloved aviation.
Amcom will re-negotiate,but will not write off. Why? then every institution in every sector will come up with spurious "bad loans".
In re-negotiating payment terms, they will have a STRONG say in how the airline is run,so this may spell the end of Johnson's control.

SaharaReporters has learnt that aviation authorities in Dakar, Senegal yesterday impounded an aircraft belonging to debt-plagued, Nigerian-based private airline, Arik Airline.
A source in Senegal's Directorate of Civil Aviation disclosed that they decided to seize aircraft belonging to Arik after the airline defaulted on earlier agreements to pay up landing fees that had accumulated for two years.
The Senegalese authorities stopped and impounded the plane moments before it was to take off for 2:00 PM yesterday enroute to Lagos. One of the passengers revealed that the aircraft was impounded along with passengers’ luggage that was already loaded on the plane.
Following the action, Arik left its Nigeria-bound passengers stranded at the airport. Some of the passengers told SaharaReporters that Arik officials had not explained or apologized to them and did not provide them with alternative means of leaving Dakar. The passenger also stated that a seriously ill passenger is among several passengers who have been abandoned to their fate in Senegal with no immediate hope of departure.
Arik Airline, a relatively new start-up airline, has been dogged by controversy since its incorporation. The airline, which began with a questionable source of start-up capital, is notorious for its terrible in-flight service, making it one of the least rated international carriers operating in Nigeria. It is believed that a few former office holders close to former President Olusegun Obasanjo floated the company – using fronts.
The airline also has a history of defaulting on service fees. It recently lost one of its aircraft in South Africa as the airline failed to service its lease loans. The airline owes Nigerian civil aviation authorities some N2 billion in unpaid fees.
