The 727 is a really nice machine to fly, especially on the minima approach. It's nothing like the 737 at all and much more stable, more like a 747 really although on that aircraft the systems are much easier to operate. The 727 engineer's panel is angled so that the Captain can reach almost any switch from his seat. Well, he can if he has nice simian sort of arms. There are not too many 727s about any more and the loss of an airworthy one is sad.
Africa and African affairs matter a great deal to China which has adopted Africa as its personal colonial cash cow. You should rather please look to the papers in Beijing for mention of this tragedy. Chinese, as it is printed in newspapers reads left to right so I am sure that there will be no difficulty there. The up and down character version is used much more in the writing found in advertisements and on menus.

Back on the thread, The 727 is a great aircraft. One of the best ever. Old doesn't mean anything if an aircraft is maintained and I'm not saying this one wasn't. I did hear that the Captain did 2 missed approaches and ran out of fuel. Anybody know?

DownIn3green,
Well said, some people just don't think before making, wide, rude and arrogant generalizations.

Not counting the military I thought only 7% of US citizens had passports and had ever left the country, those who had, mainly visited Israel.

Not sure where you get your "facts" from, but it could be true. Americans may not know much about the rest of the world, and they couldn't care less where people come to America from, as long as they assimilate into the lifestyle of drinking beer and watching American football. Sure beats some of the multiculturalism of other western countries. In a fairness, there isn't a big amount of interest in Africa, it wasn't colonized by them, and they have few ties to these places.

As for this accident, it resembles so many more 727 accidents in Central Africa. I got almost a decade of flying them into really sketchy places, and never even had an incident. Sometimes it was tough, but sufficient training and common sense worked. How could the DRC have so many wx related crashes? BTW anyone see that Ban Air super 727 in Kinshasa? Just wondering whether it was in service. Nice airplane.

Take a look at the report, there is a summary in Rumours&News.
Inexperienced crew, dubious licence validity, ATC with no licence, dubious aircraft registration etc etc.

Typical DRC corruption, a few token heads have rolled but nothing will change.

I have had dubious license validity, ATC all F-ed up, but dear god, inexperienced 727 drivers? There are plenty of experienced pilots with the 727 credentials. Why does this continue to happen in the DRC. Is this worth paying less than half the going rate? Does no one care about human life anymore? I guess that no one ever did in a few of these places, Kigali comes to mind.

rumour has it

The ATC allegedly gave inaccurate local weather information but were later found not guilty.
Is there any truth that this aircraft was converted from a VIP to a pax interior without an STC approval at some time on S9 or Swazi registration?

Right aircraft

YES, the crashed aircraft is ex UA (1965), converted VIP on Swazi registry 3D-BOC, then on Sao Tomé registry S9-DBM and then on DRC registry 9Q-BOC with a full passenger seats configuration, all this miraculously thanks to Photoshop
