Banner Towing In SA?

Hey guys,

I know im kinda flooding the forum but I believe there good questions and its helping me out quite a bit. Does anyone know why no one does banner towing in SA. Is there something in the air law that says you cant or is just not a popular option down there.

Thanks

I've seen it over Vishoek and Clifton beaches.

And there's this :
April 1st, 2011

kulula.com has become the first African passenger airline to offer a commercial SkywritingTM service, the low fare airline has announced. The service, originally developed for acrobatic display teams, has become increasingly popular thanks to technology that allows larger aircraft to safely achieve Skywriting with minimal discomfort to passengers.

"We've worked with experts from the UK's Red Arrows, as well as Boeing, to create a truly unique Skywriting offering that works safely with a commercial passenger jet. If you have something big to say, what could be better than spraying it across the skyline at 34000 feet in letters made from giant green clouds?" said Camelia Bearhart, head of In-flight Marketing Projects at kulula.

According to Bearhart, there are no safety implications for passengers. "kulula customers on the flight will experience a similar sensation to flying in a holding pattern or going on a rollercoaster. However the writing phase of the flight will be timed not to coincide with beverage services," she explains.

The new offering will initially be available on Cape Town - Jo'burg flights, but will be expanded to other routes if there is demand. It is expected that individuals will use this service for special occasions such as engagements, birthdays, and funerals as well as for commercial marketing.

The Skywriting will only add up to 10 minutes of extra flying time and passengers will be informed if it will take place on their flight when booking. The first message was delivered earlier this week with a timely advert for a new coach for one of South Africa's leading sports teams. Skywriting will cost R10 000 per letter and is available in various colours.

This service can be booked on the kulula website from the start of April
onwards. As part of a launch promotion the five best skywriting
messages posted on the brand's Facebook Page will receive a free booking.

This link sprang from the pages with gay abandon.

It seems a little more complex than at first one might have thought?

On a serious note: I used to fly for a Cape Town based company called SkyAds, operating Pawnee's. The company was sold to a Jhb based outfit called Outdoor Network which seemed to fade into non-existance.

It was a thriving business 10 years ago but probably due to poor management is no more. It could still be done for a relatively small investment. Suitable crew and training could be a bit more difficult to find.

There's a Pawnee @ Rand, owned by Scully and Academy Air that does banner towing. It is an immaculate machine at that. Why not call Academy Air and find out more? Hope that helps.

Visit www.sky-messaging.com

They've just started doing this in Cape Town and are extending to different parts of the country. They use a Piper Super Cub for now and also have a 172 Reims Rocket for high altitude banner towing.
