Nigeria bans old aircraft

Bad news for freight dogs Nigerias Federal Executive Council has dictated that any aircraft over 20 years old will not be allowed to fly in its airspace or be imported into the country.

If true.... then BA will struggle to operate allot of their 747-400s into Nigeria. What price 1st world maintenance on older aircraft, against newer aircraft with (some) third world maintenance?

Why move this to African Aviation? I would not have seen it there.

It is of interest to any one who may fly to, or over, Nigeria.

In my company we often get rumours about our 25+ year old A/C going on the Lagos route. At the moment it's the new 767s and as far as I am concerned, they are welcome to it.

Well if that is the case it will be the end of any air cargo getting in Nigeria. Seems like a bit of an own goal seeing Allied Air (with their 727's) is one of the few Nigerian success stories in the air.

Cheers

Now this seems like something that the principles at Arik might lobby / buy from their "elected" representatives.

Underhanded, and slimy. Might even be effective for the demise of Arik competition.

I wonder if they have any idea what this really means.
I googled it, and found what looks like an actual article at
allAfrica.com: Nigeria: FG Bans Over-Aged Aircraft
and according to that, the ban is on ANY aircraft over 20 years old IN NIGERIAN AIRSPACE

So, can't fly over even.

But from what I've read, more than 2/3 of commercial aircraft and more than 80% of ga aircraft are over 20 years old worldwide.

This won't shut down just one airline, or just cargo, it will shut down aviation in Nigeria, completely.

do they think that airlines will all of a sudden decide that they'll only use their newest planes to fly in/out/over Nigeria?

Old News

Read the news article very well to see that its all old news, not much in that article is being enforced.

Old a/c in Nigeria: substance,not shadows,stupid

Just like Nigerian pols to pursue peripherals like aircraft age while ignoring the shameful corruption at the oversight agencies, gross inefficiency at the airports and chronic manpower shortages. Standing joke in the community just now is that the aviation minister, who's said to be a pharmacist, {naturally}recommends expiry dates for aircraft, just as she would, for drugs

PPRuNE

In line with 5N-OSA's recommendation, i've taken a further step ahead to launch my own political party, its called Professional Pilots Rule Nigerian Electorate (PPRuNE). Our aim is to be a mega ruling party in Nigeria.

Membership is free but to be an aspirant for a post, you will need to give me 500 acres of land in Lekki, Atlantic Ocean (oops), Ikoyi, V/I & eerrm... let me say Obudu (i like cattle!)

My party will be steathily awarded all aviation contracts nationwide, so join the bandwagon.

This is all the advanced info i can give out at this stage. Suggestions for a new party song will be very much welcomed.

PPRuNE - Power to the Pilots!

I think everyone has got it wrong. The ban strictly affects any aircraft older than 20years been registered 5N,and those foreign registered under a Nigerian AOC.Technically BA can fly a 40 year old aircraft into Nigerian airspace, but cant lease that aircraft to a nigerian carrier.Allied air can continue flying their 20year plus cargo 727,because as of the time of registration they where under 20 years.Thats my understanding. And trust me,its is been ENFORCED.

Enforced? Dana Air with their 1976 birds? No, you can't be trusted.

Localiser established please crosscheck your facts, the following aircraft were delivered to DANA a few mths/years back, which means they were delivered before the 20year limit.

Besides you should know that the MD started deliveries in the early 80's.So it did not exist in 1976.

Now my challenge to you is to prove me WRONG,on ANY aircraft over 20 years registered 5N in recent times.

My Bad

My error. I didn't have any facts there. I just took some flightdeck jokes too literally. Thanks for proving they were not made in 1976. At the same time, I'll take up your challenge and try to present some facts too (from your source).

I'll just stop there. Trust me, there are many more. Plus, the limit was only reduced from 22 years to 20 years in November/December 2010

Unless you want to say "in recent times" means within the past two months.

No worries, but dont forget NCAA process is slow, delivery date is different from"inspection date".Some aircraft when approved go straight into C check, before "delivery".Some even run into financial issues thereafter. So you may have your papers, but haven't taken delivery.I cant say for sure thats the issue with this airframes, but having been through the process, working with NCAA,i will say its very likely,as the time frame in your examples quite close.

Nothing that a big box full of Naira won't fix if placed on the right doorstep. After all, it's Nigeria.

I believe the Nigerian authorities are also planning to remove ALL terrestrial navigation aids by 2016 - let's hope they have all those RNAV procedures up and running by then ...
