Nouakchott
Have the "opportunity" to visit Nouakchott, Mauritania in the next few weeks. Just curious if there is anything special about the place. Any recommendations on hotel(s) or anyplace to get a "cold one"?
Thanks in advance...

I wouldn't call that an opportunity, more something along the lines of punishment.... The only decent place to stay is the Novotel. They sell "cold ones" but you'll pay dearly for it and that is if they aren't out of stock again. If I was you, bring your own cold ones with, safes you a sh!tload of money.

Thanks for the advice. Sadly, where I am coming from is also a "dry" country and taking along my own supply isn't an option. I do think the Novotel is the planned hotel.
Thanks,

Cold Ones
Years ago I use to fly in to to Nouakchott once a week. There was a westerner working there. And we use to bring him Buds in a bag so no one could see what was going on. Also another thing that comes to mind is a fellow pilot was on final app, and had to go around because of camels was on the runway. Me self had to make a miss app, because of sandstorm.
NKC airport
Like many other airports in that part of the world if the President was coming or going they would close the airport for all traffic. No Notams of course as this was always a "state secret". While I was flying there this would happen at least once every month. The only hint this would happen is if the "Band" would show up and start practicing.
Therefore don't plan landing on minimum fuel as you may need more to hold outside the control zone for an untermined time.
Besides that ATC was always friendly.

Curious place...specially when you get a Taxi without windows, on a dark color, and the drivers door in a white different one with great decals of "Ayuntamento de Andaluzia, Espana"

Damn - got my visa from the Mauritanian Consulate in Dakar last week (had to pay the official an extra 2000cfa to fill in the form because the one I got from the Embassy in Paris was "an old one"), booked a flight at 0400 on the Thursday morning with Air Mauritanie (in a B737 with Tunisair markings). Fortunately did not pay the head of the booking office in cash as he insisted. Flight cancelled, so didn't get to visit Nouakchott but also didn't lose my money!
