Parachutist dies at Virginia

Some sad news: Sapa reports
A South African Air Force parachuting team member, Warrant-Officer Brian Slade, plunged to his death on Friday during training ahead of the Durban Airshow.
"I can confirm that a military man hit the ground when his parachute did not open. It happened during an exercise for the
airshow," said Durban Airshow spokesman Ray de Vries.
Slade, is a Pretoria resident who is believed to be in his 50s. His next-of-kin have been notified.

Blue Skies

Cheers Brian.....

Pleasure to have known you, drank with you and dived with you.

It was really fitting to see the Falcons do the missing formation for you at the show......I don't know anyone that has been in the SAAF as long as you and still able to be gentleman.....one certainly with the best sense of humor.

To his family, friends and skydiving buddies, he may be missed but never forgotten.

Arch 1000, Drink 1000......

Re: Parachutist down practising for Virginia Airshow
The SAAF (Boere) modded Turbo dak had a history of tailstrikes with parachutist. Was indentified during the project phase already, squat was done except to change SOP, even with the port engine throttled to idle there is still enough residual thrust to blow the jumping body into the tailplane. On the old piston powered aircraft a jumper could physically jump up towards the tailplane and would never hit it as the downwash of the wing was the strongest factor in blowing the body away from the tailplane.

It all has to do with the thrustline being the same as the old piston engine, the propwash being stronger hits the tailplane and it also causes vibrations on the tail which leads to fatigue. The correct way was to follow the Bassler conversion where the thrustline was moved a few inches lower.......

RIP and condolonces, another tradegy that could have been averted.

Never heard of a Turbodak injuring or killing a parachutist before from a tail strike. Brian has been jumping from them for donkey's years...why now, was it a Turbodak? What is the speculation?

GS, I appreciate that this is a repost from another forum, and not your direct input, but it sounds a bit sensationalist. I'd suggest that you go back to that forum and ask the person for actual details of these previous tailstrike accidents. Also, ask them how sure they are that the thrust line of the SAAF turbine Daks is the same as the piston Dak, and that the Basler is lower than the original. May illustrate the extent of their knowledge - or lack thereof.
