What´s happening at Walvis Bay now ???

Hello guys and girls,

I have not been to Walvis Bay in a while now, and I was wondering how the airport upgrading was progressing ?

Any news on what exactly they are planning to do at Walvis ?

There was an article in Airliner World a while ago, saying that the main interest was for cargo flights to Europe (possibly Spain), to support the fish industry.
Can anyone confirm this !?!

The article also said the airport would be CAT III equipped and A380 ready once all the work was complete.

Cheers

That sound like a fishy story, as nothing seems to be happening

Why did South Africa transfer its Walvis Bay territory to Namibia?

Was a referendum of the residents held to determine their preference, as was done in 1948 in the Dominion of Newfoundland? Newfoundlanders were given the choice of resuming responsible independence, continuing under British rule through the Commission of Government or joining Canada. (A sizeable faction favoured joining the USA but this option was kept off the ballots.)

Did South Africa receive payment for the territory, as Russia did from the USA for Alaska? If not, why not?

Are the residents of Walvis Bay better off now than if it had continued as part of South Africa?

Interesting question. Wasn´t it kinda like with Hong Kong and Macao? It just seemed appropriate to give Walvis Bay to Namibia.
