Angola?
Dear colleagues. Can you support me by some info about? Tips, tricks etc. are very welcome. Not about Africa at all, but may you compare Angola with Ghana? I have been in Ghana some years ago and now there is some chances for short term contract in Angola... Base in Luanda I guess.

If you have a choice stay in Ghana. Luanda is chaos and a few speak or understand English. Went to a supermarket today. To get there, shop and pay took 2 hours. And that for a piece of meat and two onions. Best of Luanda is gear up out of there.

Thanks, but what about situation at all? How is ATC (I know, that sometimes it is not so good ))). When I was in Ougadougou for first time I was very surprised, hehe. And, I know that Angola was a Portugal colony before. So, is there problem with english or not in ATC). About approaches, only arc`s and VOR/DME or they have ILS?

Traffic is horrible, often takes you more than 2 hours to get to the airport. We rather used a driver there.
Skillie did not mention the cost of living there. I don't know if this will be reflected by our T&Cs. In 2007, LAD was ranked as the most expensive city of the world for ex-pats.
Weather is sub-tropical, I personally don't like it, Malaria all year long. Not much to do if you have time off. Typical diseases spreading around. Just caught one myself because of hygienic conditions.
Criminality seems to be less than in SA but also remarkable.
Not knowing Ghana so far, I also recommend you to rather go to/stay in Ghana.

First, I would like to know what kind of contract you've been offered
Second, If you've been in Ghana i don't think there's much of a difference.
I work for an oil company here in Angola, I fly the 1900, they pay for everything. True!! traffic is horrible here..there's no rules, the bigger car has the right of way, good thing, you don't have to drive if you don't want to...
This is a third world country brother!! if you come here you have to understand that. I just came here 3 weeks ago..still waiting for my work visa. you can do the research about living in Angola through YOU Yube..that's what I did...
I am the # 6 american here..the other guys love it..six weeks on...six weeks off, company pays for airfare home...flying it's very easy when you get used to..and people are very friendly and humble, all you have to do is treat everybody with respect...this is their country..but if you're and ass no matter were you are will not take you anywere.."Just basic rules"
When I get back home..six weeks off, with good money in my pocket...

There are plenty worse places in this part of the world...Just none as expensive ! A reasonable pizza could set you back $35 / $45 and a reasonable steak closer to $70 / $80....
Generally, ATC is OK - probably better than further north....Main concerns are the Russian / Kazakh / etc crews who are great to socialise with but do seem to cause problems with their severely limited English / Portuguese....
Facilities at all the airfields can be ' basic ' but become manageable with experience....Once out of Luanda, life can be difficult, especially if you have to overnight, and as mentioned, the climate seems to particulalry encourage health risks- high humidity and poor sanitation are a recipe for for all sorts of nasty problems, but again are manageable with the correct medicins....Traffic makes even Lagos seem like a pleasant Sunday afternoon country drive in rural Sweden....
On the positive side, crime rates are comparatively low.....With so many Cubans and Brazilians around, the off-duty social side of things are terrifiic - especially out on the Bar...Lots of oil money sloshing around and available if you provide good quality service and still a relative shortage of modern levels of logistic support for the oil companies so still strong demand for good people and services....
Not too sure if I'd want to live there, and would be way behind Ghana in a list of preferences....but absolutely no problem to work there when I have to and actually enjoy it as a change from much of the security enforced off-duty boredom in most of the other countries up the West African coast....

Just wondering,
Is it possible to score a "free" 1900 rating in Angola? Any info on pay, T&C's, length of contract etc?
Currently flying elsewhere in africa, but contract soon coming to an end. Looking to line up my next gig. 1700 hours TT, 550 Turbine.

"free" rating??? what are you talking about? sounds like your one of those just trying to use companies to get ahead...wrong attitude man! Havent heard of a "free" rating in a while!
If you apply to certain companies (and even in ANGOLA) and they like your CV they might offer you a rating, but that doesnt come "free" you probably gona have to sign a bond... get it?
