New security procedure in Soutrh Africa ??

Hi all, got his communication this morning from our travel office - anyone know about this and can shed some light ????

Please see a communication with regards to travel for conference or training. Please advise all your travellers of this as a few incidents have occurred at ORT International Airport:

Dear travellers and coordinators

We have had an incident whereby a passenger was denied boarding because he could not prove he was going to attend a training programme on behalf of his company and it has resulted in him having to be accommodated on another flight on another day which has delayed his training schedule.

From the follow up calls we have been advised as follows:

Prior to check in at Johannesburg Airport there is a separate company that is checking documentation and requesting information regarding purpose of travel.

The company that does these spot checks then feeds-back to the airline check in, confirming if the passenger can or cannot be boarded, so the airlines are not taking responsibility for the reason to offload they just advise that they do as per the feedback received.

From this incident we please request that any traveller that is going to be travelling from now on please have company identification on them to prove that they do work for the company that they are travelling for and possibly a letter of confirmation from the company here to verify reason for travel. We would prefer to have this incident not be repeated with any other of our esteemed corporate travellers.

Not sure if I fully understand what is implied here RobinB. When you say a pax was refused boarding I can only assume He/She has already passed through fairly stringent security checks but fails to provide proof of reason for travel. If you are not a potential security threat and there is no legal reason/restriction on your movements then what has it got to do with someone else as to where or why you are going there? Was this International or local flight?

Have to agree, seek legal advice. If ticketed and checked in it as absolutely nobody's business why you are travelling.

Bit early for an April Fool's joke?
