Mango 15hr enduro

Read in the daily rag that Mango flight JE169 spent a total of 15hrs trying to get into CPT yesterday. Apparently they went up and down between JNB and CPT no less than 5 times and diverted to Bloem aswell. Anyone know what the hell happened?

Paper says they couldn't get in because of the weather. Is mango not Cat3 certified?

Haven't been to CT for a while, but last I checked the ILS has been down graded to Cat 1 for quite some time.

Nope its CAT111 at this moment....I do believe the other nights fog was even below those minimums...so no one was getting in, even with the smartest equipment.

The forecasts were for 300m visibility. Comair got in on CAT III. But there were a couple of stressed crews. PE was forecast CAVOK but also became 500m vis. Nationwide, 1time and Mango all turned around (approach ban etc).

Mango went back to Bloem, sat for an hour then went back to JHB. Called out standby crew and dispatched for CT again at 1am (same WX in Cape Town!!!!). Lo and behold they went around back to JHB.

Dispatched eventually back to Cape Town in the morning. IMHO not professional planning by ops and crew.

I would have been p###ed if I had to do 5 legs to get to Cape Town.

I don't think Mango had a choice. Could not find hotel accommodation for their pax and had to continue trying.

We touched down in CT at 22:10 Wednesday night. Only saw the runway at 60’. So – no Cat III – no landing. I don’t know – but is Mango not Cat III rated ???? The 800 surley must be !!!!!!!!!

Mango 737-800's are cat III approved, Mango crew are CaT III trained BUT Mango still waits for Cat III approval from CAA. Sure Nico Buz will want some answers now from CAA why the delay for the approval !!!!

(Must admit I'm still searching for that orange MD80??? and 15 hrs fuel... didn't you know Mango flies orange B747-400!!!)
