Air Mauritius in turbulence again!

Scare in the air as turbulence injures 26
Staff reporter
Friday, August 31, 2007
Twenty-six passengers and crew on a Hong Kong-bound flight from Mauritius were injured when their aircraft encountered turbulence shortly before landing at Chek Lap Kok yesterday.
The pilot of Air Mauritius MK640 called aviation officials at Hong Kong International Airport for assistance at 12.23pm, a spokesman for the Airport Authority said.
The Airbus landed safely 25 minutes later with ambulances on standby, he said.
A passenger told reporters there was no announcement before the aircraft hit turbulence.
He said the cabin was shaken for two minutes and luggage was scattered all over the floor.
"About 10 people were injured," he said.
"One guy had a neck injury ... I was very scared."
Another said some passengers did not have their seatbelts fastened and were thrown up against the roof of the cabin.
A police spokeswoman said the aircraft carried 293 passengers.
Five crew members and 21 passengers suffered head injuries and cuts and were taken to Princess Margaret Hospital.
Another 20 passengers were sent to a clinic for medical treatment.
None of the passengers was a Hong Kong citizen, according to the police.
Two passengers were carried away in stretchers while others were able to walk to an emergency room.
Most were quickly released from hospital but four people, including an 11-year-old, needed further treatment. They were said to be in a in stable condition.
Civil Aviation director general Norman Lo Shung-man said the aircraft ran
into turbulence outside Hong Kong airspace.
Air traffic control staff were not informed in advance of the number of injured aboard the aircraft.
Lo said the department will investigate the incident.

The pictures from the website show a picture of a passenger with suspected neck/head injury. Very serious indeed!
Not the first time, heard of a similar case where a MK training captain took evasive action against a TA over the Flic 'n Flac NDB in Mauritius and as a result, a cabin crew was put out of immediate action, for a life time.
a TA, not an RA....! Can you believe it?

And now they want the same guy to head the A330 training team!
Can you believe it? Only in Air Mauritius

Sidestick driver... you say you heard of a similar case.... please explain the similarity between a turbulence encounter and the inappropriate reaction to a TA. The only similarity is that people were injured. Seems like your comments indicate you have an axe to grind.

Avi8tor... a more approprate way to have said what you did is ' SAA experienced this'.

Heathrow09L... They also had a flap jam after take-off from LHR, a green hydraulic failure on the way to Frankfurt, an engine failure in Melbourne. I guess they are an airline, similar to others, exposed to the environment and mechanical failures and other threats that face an airline. Maybe if you elaborate a little more we will all understand the point you are trying to make.

I believe there can be little more truth out there besides this newspaper report.

Yes, VS1g, people did get hurt and that was the initial point and in one of these two cases, the first was avoidable and as a result, a cabin crew was badly injured. Amazingly people get fired over engine shut downs, or the lack thereof on the ATR fleet, but injuring a cabin crew in the cabin, a person moves up the ladder in MK. The list goes on and on...

Any truth in the above????

The FRA turbulence incident happened about 14 years ago. It was a MK B767ER at about FL 200 decending into FRA. Seat belt signs were on but 5 cabin crew were slow to strap in. 4 were injured and a 5th was crippled for life.
CAUSE-- embedded CBs in 8/8ths stratus and an all red radar.

Local Senior Mauritian pilots are totally bullet proof and can do no wrong hence the promotion for those who screw up. Expates get heavily punished if they have any incident they can possibly be blamed for so there is nothing unusual about any of this.
One of the most senior trainers there today took a 767 off the runway in Bombay while landing and left the plane for the Chief pilot to take over with all flat tyres. No 700 entry,no report, no incident, no investigation, no repercussions. Around the same time an expate pilot stopped on the runway with a TO DISAGREE because they hadnt selected the correct TO FLAP. Correctly- he stopped, returned to the beginning of the runway and put in an incident report. The present senior Ops manager tried to throw the book at the pilots and mostly succeeded in his heavy handedness. RESULT-- from then on everyone in MK tried to cover up incidents if they could possibly get away with them.

Just heard a rumour, that an expat ATR42 captain had resigned, had a lot of bad things to say about MK when he left, went and got himself a B737 rating, and is now coming back as a direct entry captain on the A319..........

Mmmm

Yes, strange things happen at MK.....

It is true that the locals are untouchable, irrespective of how they screw up, and believe me, there is a couple of them flying there... totally clueless. How they ever got licenses is beyond me.

I reckom MK will last maybe a few years more before it will go broke and be taken over by big companies such as Emirates and the likes.

MK is about to go the same route as Air Sri Lanka. The attitude of the locals bankrupted the airline, and MK is fast tracked to go exactly the same way.

Why??? Poor management, 6 MD's is 3 years, to much political interference, ontouchable comrades of the Prime Minister, and a DFO that should have retired a long time ago.
