Airways Park in neglect

Airways Park in neglect
I had a meeting at Airways Park 2 weeks ago and was shocked at the state of the building. Twelve years ago I had regular visits to Airways Park, a pleasant, friendly and well kept building. Sorry to say it has “Africanized”. From the moment you arrive at the main doors you are met by very unenthusiastic, unprofessional reception, the dirty interior and general feel of neglect.

Maybe you don’t realize it if you work there everyday and is exposed to this on a daily bases. It sure strike you if you arrive as a visitor. Please go and visit any of the other Star Alliance headquarters and decide for your self. Places to be proud of. The difference is remarkable.

Coleman Andrews sold the vacuum cleaners during his term. Andre Viljoen sold and leased back the waterproofing and Kaya believes that the downwash form the helicopter he uses has made the brooms obsolete. (There are no sweepers left anyhow, as this is a cost saving measure).

Sorry to say it has “Africanized”.

ByAirmail, please can you elaborate on this statement. africanized as opposed to what?, "europeanised" . Also, please refrain from exposing your bigotory on a forum which on the surface is intended for rumours pertaining to pilot issues, and not cheap nazi propoganda.

Airways park not in Africa?

Sorry, can’t resist a reply.

I fail to see any bigotry or racial overtones in ByAirMail’s post. Indeed, the concept of “Africanisation” has nothing, to my untrained eye, to do with race. It has to do with the continent itself, IMHO.

As for his comments about Airways Park; he is correct. I am in and out of there almost daily, and the general state of the building is indicative of neglect. It has begun to mirror the myriad of other government buildings I have been through in Africa – neglected, needing repair, paint, inoperative lifts, missing doors, filthy carpets, broken and/or overflowing toilets, inoperative aircon – it’s all there for anyone to see.

Perhaps that is what ByAirMail is getting at.

Yes, we can move along (as we are all Africans), but it is not a bigoted or racial attitude that allows one to see that the building is becoming run down.

Contract Dog and JetNut, give the man a break.

Simple.

If you can see reality and would criticise what's wrong, and you do this in Africa............you're a racist.

It's very perplexing and certainly disturbing to be lambasted for being "politically correct", or for that matter culturally aware in this day and age in South Africa.

But then again, that is a typical response I would expect from members of South African aviation. The fundamental cause of the continual demise (sabotage) of the airline industry in SA (most notably in SAA) is glaringly obvious when one analyses its players more closely....

Elaborate.

during lunch time the offices smell like an african eating house and the new elite are still eating with there hands. Its the 21st century!!!

I simply couldn't resist the urge to reply. I am an African. Some of the things you mentioned really puzzled me. Please answer and help me understand the following 2 questions I have for you.

1.How does an African eating house smell like?
2. What happens when the food Africans are used to is usually eaten by hands?

I would understand if the "Africans" didn't wash their hands. Thats not on!!

Politics aside, please help clear this.

Jetnut ....Wake Up mate...you know pretty well by what he means by Africanized. Just look at the state of the roads, basic infrastructure etc. To be politically correct. It is dirty dusty rundown like the rest of Africa's infrustructure.

JETNUT would you please explain what you mean with above statement? Are you implying that SAA is in decline due to white racist players in the industry??

Or are you implying SAA is in decline due to current mismanagement by previously disadvantaged and therefore inadequately educated/experienced management??

Or are you just using big words in a long sentence that makes no sense?? Are you perhaps one of those righteous Europeans who do tours to Africa to come and ask for forgiveness for the colonial past??

I was not going to get into this one but had to comment on this little statement from Jetnut

And Jetnut I suppose the white farmers and the British people are to blame for Zimbabwe becoming "Africanized" ..............obvious its those filthy colonials again, when will they stop terrifying poor old Africa and stealing everything.

By the way, it only took the Germans and Japanese about 20 years to go from smoking holes to some of the most powerful economies in the world, please inform me (using your vast education) why Africa has only been able to go in the other direction..............no dont bother actually I am sure its the Colonials, or the whiteys or whoever else you choose to blame.

African and Proud

Here we go again

The apparent state of decay has nothing do do with Africanness. These are signs of an airline in financial woes. Perhaps the Senior (Europinised) Captains can donate a portion of their R1.5 mil pa package to refurbish the building. Thats where SAA money goes. Now Khaya has to take the final blow after the Mitchells and Cookes of this world signed the most ridiculous agreements for the pilots. Myburgh and then Coleman sold all SAA had. viljoen signed the most senseless lease agreements.

People eating with their hands are entitled to practice their culture, So do those who marry their cousins, and nobody has the right to undermine or criticise their culture.

This is sickening, no wonder Aviation is still what it's like in this country

what a load of kk!! You paint a picture of the building crumbling to the ground- the place is clean and in good order- I see no broken windows, no busted light bulbs- no broken tiles, lifts?? man you are talking such a load of hoarse st you literally stumble over the cleaners doing their jobs everyday. I have never seen an overflowing toilet in this building-ever- broken lifts- where????
Maybe you should take some photos next time you are through the building and share them with us.
I believe when you walk around the admin building during lunch time the offices smell like an African eating house and the new elite are still eating with there hands. Its the 21st century!!!
You sound bitter- shame, who cares what people eat and how they eat it. That’s the thing about democracy, every person has the right to say and do (and eat) as they please. That freedom also allows you, wing tip, to hold your racist views- its your right. Next time I suggest you take another route so as to avoid exposing your refined nostrils to the heady aroma of people enjoying their lunch.

So, DJ, you say that I talk K...K? You are obviously implying I have another motive for defending ByAirMail's observations? Pray, tell what that motive might be?

No, Sir. there is no hidden aganda here, I merely state what is plain to see. However, in your case, there is none so blind as ....

For starters, the flight ops lifts in the old building (not the new block where the beancounters are) have not worked properly since Micky Mitchell's days. On Friday, the only way I could get up to the top floor from the second was to push the down button, go to the basement and from there catch the other lift upwards! The simulator building lift is also U/S. Go see for yourself.

The ground floor toilets were under water and big not a month ago; I had to throw a pair of shoes away after inadvertently stepping into the bog in the dark one evening.

Try and drink a coffee off an atrium table and you will find it on your lap as the tables have seen better days.

The door leading from the ground floor up the simulator building stairs to the first floor has been removed - so much for fire protection.

Two of the 4 sign-on computers were bust last week. Check the state of the outside bag storage area while you are there.

The list goes on, but there are none so deaf ....

I have no doubt the building is not your direct responsibility, DJ, so nobody is blaming you. You also surely have better things to do and worry about than a rant on PPrune. However, next time you are in, spend a few minutes in the "smoking courtyard" - especially after about 16h00 or on a weekend when the workers of the day have been there all day and nobody has been around with a broom. Delightful stuff, I must say. The only reason you keep falling over the "cleaners" is because they are asleep on the floor!

The building is sick, and LGM must surely bear some responsibility. Probably, though, repairs and maintenance, not to say cleaning as well, are probably also casualties of the restructuring cost-cutting initiative.

ByAirMail is correct - Airways Park is not a pleasant example of a Star Alliance partner HQ building.
