Question ALTP EXAMINATIONS (South Africa)

Well I have finally decided to get going on the ALTP examinations and have a couple of questions?

Q1: Which are the toughest / most failed exams?

Q2: What notes are the best to buy?

Any advice or comments with respect to the above examinations most welcome and appreciated.

Same here (the wife and I).

Are you talking self study ? We're going for the FTC ground course starting Oct 1st. I understand FTC still sets some of the questions but notes are difficult for self study. Someone I know passed self study with Avex notes....

Good luck.

Cool

Howzit
I passed the atpl exams last June.

I found Avex is okay for most of the knowledge you need. Especially the exercise chapters (with worked answers) for instruments and nav gen. Notes are old though and don't provide some of the stuff you need to know for ATG...
FTC covers a lot of the ATG stuff in their typical exam quesions which are excellent.
Don't know about Aeronav although one of my mates passed 4/4 using just these.

I can provide you with at least a dozen of the questions I remember for ATG... if you so wish !

Cheers

3-Greens,

I passed all the ALTP exams through self study using Avex notes, I've found by far that Avex covers the subject thoroughly and with good explanations. Although FTC typical exam questions parallel the real thing extremely closely, its worth doing them over and over agin, until perfected.
As for the worst subject- brace yourself for plotting!
The problem with this subject lies with CAA's multiple choice answers. For instance you will find that after doing a plot u end up with an answer that falls exactly between answer A and answer B.
So the moral of the story, accuracy, one has to be extrmely accurate when plotting and make sure that you use a very sharp pencil.
Unlike comm plotting you'll find that plotting in the high nothern latitudes can become interesting.

Good luck.

Oh and by the way I found that CAA's answers are based on a path finder (i.e TAS,RAS etc.) and not the'ol Aristo confuser.

Cool

I did the FTC ground course about 3 years ago and found that they give you a lot of extra in the class as such. There books , then , where not very "selfstudy friendly". A combination of all is the best. However , i haven't heard anything good come out of anybody lately about there groundcourses. To much in to short a time. All the best with the subjects !!

A while ago but i got by on the Avex notes. Ditto on the plotting... a bit more than you'd expect and since I didn't have a pathfinder a lot of the answers were iffy.
