SAA's salary increases begin to trickle down
With Link having just 'negotiated' their increases and SAX increases on the cards it seems that inevitable effect of SAA's icreases from last year are starting to take effect on industry salaries. I wonder how many of these pilots who will be benefiting from this were in fact the ones who were bitching and moaning on this sight a few months ago.

It won't. Link got their increase because they were losing pilots to SAX and Comair. SAX will go for a fair increase as Comair have tried to do.
We look at the SAA scales, because we can get them and then ignore them till next year when we take another look and have another giggle at how the tail wags the dog at SAA.

SAA salaries are pure fantasy at the company I work for, and serve only in the entertainment role - pressure to increase salaries comes from within, and historically has also happened when the threat of losing too many pilots to more relevant competing companies has existed. ie Traditional supply and demand. Note that SAA has too little demand to actually make any real difference. Perhaps if they were hiring in the hundreds per year, but they're not.
It's difficult to believe that this delusion still exists in the mind of some.
Edit to add: In fact, I can't believe somebody can be this clueless, and it must be an attempt at baiting people. If so - you got me!

Correct!!! People go to the better paid jobs...pilots leave...management increase salaries to stop pilots from leaving...if you like it or not SAA pay does affect the lower paid jobs.

It's not a question of 'liking it or not' - thats nonsensical. I agree, WERE SAA to hire lots of people all the time, it WOULD be a more normal supply and demand situation. But I can tell you for a fact, straight from the horses mouth: The company I work for does not even look at SAA pilot's salaries, since a) they feel that such salaries are unsustainable in our situation, and b) they don't feel that SAA is a threat because they take only a few pilots away, hence 'supply and demand' does not apply as much as you think it does. I did say 'more relevant competing companies'. SAA is not a relevant competing company in terms of salaries and situation.
To expand (and I did mention this before), the reality is that SAA hires in such small 'doses' (in between trying to sneak some guys in between bouts of affirmative action fever, and consultant induced hiring freezes), that other companies need not plan on SAA hiring all their pilots away from them - it's literally a very small percentage of pilots lost to SAA per company (pilots from 1time, Comair, Nationwide, Link, SAX etc etc all contribute to the SAA pilot intake, thus not many are lost per company).
Hence I feel that your claim that SAA affects supply and demand to a great extent is not as true as you believe. Nonetheless, if it makes you feel better, continue to believe it.

Shrike200 has hit the nail on the head. I would imagine its the drain to foreign carriers, like CX, Emirates etc etc that have a greater influence on the local pay scales rather than SAA. Yes most local boys and girls want in to SAA, but we all know the reality of the numbers. There are more ex Link / Sax boys in CX than former SAA. And just to illustrate the point, a lot of these guys cracked the nod at SAA too.

Then again, if I had to sit and listen to the likes of Frogman, JetNut and divinehover for 8 hours at a time, I would also want more than 1/2 a mil per year.
