Connie in Joburg
Recently I flew into Joburg and saw a Constellation in what appeared to be an airworthy condition. Can anyone let me know what its background is and what it does these days? Thanks.

I think you may be refering to the Connie standing outside the SAA Technical Centre. This old bird doesnt fly, but i believe the apprentice engineers have a hand in keeping her in ship shape. Well, this was the case a couple of years ago......perhaps that has changed too.

Absolutely ages and eons ago, SAA used to park their 748s round that part of the airfield. Was it Delta? Others used to park 748s, F27s and other sundry machines there too. The Constellation/Starliner was always being 'worked' on by, as has been said, apprentices. One rather thought that it was flown some thirty years ago? Perhaps Scully can remember for it is fairly sure that, if it were, he had a hand in the flying of it?

IF it's a 1649, these were one fine aeroplane.
I have personally done 17 hours in the 1649, trans-Pacific.
