Rumbek, Sudan
I'm going on contract in Rumbek in the next few weeks and was wondering what to expect. I hear it's a tented camp for aircrew only. Has anyone been there recently and if so whats the deal?
Thanx

Nah, mate. Not me....
The Afex camp is tented but it's not reserved for aircrew so there are a fair amount of other aid workers there. Cold water showers but it's so hot you won't notice, food's pretty good and there is an internet facility but it drops occasionally. Didn't see many camel spiders but there are snakes. It becomes a swamp when it rains (around this time of year ). Beds are a bit cramped and if you need to take a leak at night just paddle the bed across to the communal ablutions (Beds are shaped like canoes and hard on the spine). Lots of mozzies, fair bit of traffic out of Rumbek and I believe they now have a tower. Not much to do so drag along plenty of reading material as the camp TV is pretty much fully occupied by the locals watching netball for boys.

Rumbek
Have they told you what you're gonna be flying outa there? King Air or Twin Otter?
There's some good people out there, but like the others said, take plenty of anti mozzie stuff.
Does ET still operate outa there?

townshipdog, its propably the best place to stay by far in any sudan place, ground runway, the camp is the best, spent two nights there with two c-130's. camp is great. almost like loki, but i would say even better. tents is a pleasure to stay in, own bathroom, shower with hot water. food is great as well. If i were you i would be running to get there
