1Time Cockpit policy?

My company managed to get me a seat on a 1Time flight from JHB to Cape Town the other night to urgently fetch an aircraft that had to be brought to JHB for maintenance.

On boarding the 1 Time flight, I noticed that another pilot, in uniform, was standing in the front galley talking to the hosties. The cabin crew were all crammed up in the front galley. They obviously had a lot to talk about.

The Captain & FO was in their seats.

Before take off, the Captain announced that the FO would be flying us to Cape Town, and that he (the FO) would give us info and wx updates as the flight progressed.

About 10 minutes after levelling off, the FO climbed out of his seat, and started chatting to the hosties in the front galley for about 20 minutes. He then used the toilet and after emerging from the loo remained in the galley chatting to the hosties.

The next minute the "silver haired" captain (N.S.) of the failed coup Boeing 727 strolled down the isle, stuck his head into the cockpit and started chatting to the captain. This continued for about 15 minutes, all whilst the FO was still standing in the front galley chatting to the hosties.

The FO then climbed back into his seat, and the jump seat was offered to the ex 727 Captain. The ex 727 captain was obviously very interested in how a MD 82 functioned, as he had his head right in there, and the 1 Time Captain obviously proceeded to brief him extensively on the doings of a MD
82 with hands being pointed to the ceiling panel & switches, switches being touched etc.

Needless to say, the pax received no update on anything during the flight, as the crew was so busy briefing the ex 727 captain who stayed in the jump seat for the landing, and remained there once the aircraft parked at the gate.

So what is the 1 Time policy?

Do they allow anyone to occupy the jump seat during the flight?

Do they make exceptions for other pilots, or do they allow any crew member to occupy the jump seat, or is it Captain discretion?

If the FO was suppose to fly us to FACT, why did he spend approximately 35 minutes in the galley chatting to the hosties?

At one stage it looked like a major gathering up front with rear end hosties coming and going, the chief hostie sticking her head in and out the cockpit, chatting to the captain and the captain briefing his jump seat pax, and all this with the FO out of his seat.

I must admit it did not look very professional to me, and I wondered what the reaction would have been if there was a sudden emergency?

Maybe the Captain (G.S.) can explain his filosophy of professional cockpit procedures. I can just add that our Chief Pilot would not have condoned such actions.

Whadya say?

Re: 1Time Cockpit policy?

Having flown 1Time many times (haha) i can say i've noticed they seem to have an 'open door' policy to the flightdeck, which is a great thing.Apart from the obvious non-correlation that the capt said the FO would be flying but in fact he was alledgedly chatting up hosties (well, you all know how i feel about 1Time hosties ),i see no problem whatsoever in allowing and welcoming a 727 capt to the flightdeck.

you got there safely i presume?

Enough said.

cheers,Cb

Re: 1Time Cockpit policy?

Well, for one, i have to agree with Cb on the hosties...

As far as touching switches, isn't that what pilots get paid to do? Or maybe you fly an Airbus in which case you're not allowed to touch any of them switches n dials n stuff

Think the open cockpit idea is great, especially to get the youngsters involved and the co hooked up with them hosties

God Bless The Hosties and their Miniskirts

Amen

Re: 1Time Cockpit policy?

Some cheese to go with that whine, perhaps?

Unlike a certain taxpayer funded airline, the 1Time folks are quite approachable...

Re: 1Time Cockpit policy?

Hey Inverted,

Kak attempt at stirring the pot.

Ever consider that the FO might have been discussing operational issues with the hostie? For all we know there might have been a room shortage at the night stop hotel. The kind fellow was probably offering to share his room with one of the cabin crew and applying correct CRM techniques in ascertaining which one it would be....

Re: 1Time Cockpit policy?

viva One Time

Sounds like the sort of operation I could work for. Crewed by human beings, not machines. Most pax dont give jack about what the cruising altitude and the name of the FO is anyway.

Hey, if no-one is making people aware of these, who do you think will, the poor pax who doesn't know what is allowed and what not?

I say that Swiss cheese with all the holes NOT lined up, pleeze.

Anyway, see the hornets are gathering up! Anyone, quick, bring Doom and a lighter!

Re: 1Time Cockpit policy?

Thanx for the response all you lover boys!

"In the light of aviation safety, no visitors will be allowed on the flight deck at any time during the flight". Ever heard that before?

FO must have been discussing operational issues...... the kind that happens when you go inverted in the hotel room....

Mmmmm, thinking about it, the 1 Time hosties are'nt bad at all. Maybe for that reason the cramming of the "front office" during the flight!

Stirring the pot???? Not likely! Just asking a simple question.

I kinda expected some serious answers, but I see now that most of you do have a bit of humor, and I'll accept the answers in the "gist" it was said!

Re: 1Time Cockpit policy?

As far as I know SAA is quite strict about the closed door policy but I was on an SAA flight the other day and at least 3 or 4 times on a 4 hour flight either the captain or FO would come out and use the loo, chat with the hosties for a while, grab some coffee and then go back.

Sure it makes is safer to have the closed door police, but it seems that the big boys in the office are more worried than the guys in the plane. What's the harm in going out of the cockpit every now and then???

I think that the people making the rules are a tiny bit paranoid!

Re: 1Time Cockpit policy?

Where they chatting to the hosties IN the loo??? If so, I figure you were wrong in thinking they were just chatting.

Question Re: 1Time Cockpit policy?

Guys I personnaly still love the old way of doing things : A visit to the cockpit when permission is granted.

I normally send my business card and I normally get to the front (with a $10 note) . We (as mostly Africans) must remember that this closed cockpit idea was just another American dream (or shall I stay out of sheit with Bert and say first world ?)

Many an airline has slacked their rules that I have flown on the past year or two and I personally do not have a problem with a cockpit visit if asked / request granted. And that is especially true for kids visiting.

Come on guys it was most of you's dream to do it ..

I say : Let us not be led by our noses just because ... oeps nearly said so .. uhm because the 1st world says so ...

Just my thoughts to give the thread a more serious look ... what you say Always Upside ?
