Question Diesel Power....the future?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First Flight: TT62 Thielert Powered Diesel Twin

On Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005, High Performance Aircraft's innovative and uniquely apportioned TT62 Alekto diesel twin prototype D-IXTT took off from Heringsdorf airport on the island of Usedom, Germany for its maiden flight.

The successful maiden flight marks the first in a series of qualification flights as the TT62 goes through certification testing.

D-IXTT was piloted by test pilot Gerard Guilaumaud, who started flight testing with a series of low-level flights at moderate speeds over the island of Usedom. The maiden flight of D-IXTT occurred two years after development of the innovative diesel twin started. The flight test program will culminate with JAR 23 certification in 2006, with first customer deliveries shortly thereafter.

The TT62 Alekto is a composite twin powered by two TAE Centurion 4.0 diesel V8 engines that are buried in the rear fuselage, behind the pressurized cabin. The 310 HP engines run on Jet A and are designed to propel the TT62 to cruise speeds of well over 200kt. HPA expects about 50 nautical miles per gallon, and a 1,700 nm range with IFR reserves.

The TT62 also features a state-of-the-art glass cockpit, with three displays and sidesticks for control. The aircraft is currently priced at around 500,000 Euros.

What do you guys think? Do you think it will revolutionise GA, or are the folks gonna stick to the ever popular Conti's and Lycs?

DIESEL RULZ

Firstly there is a big problem :

For anything to be worth certification it MUST be seen as FAA certified or it is worthless to the world. Nothing flies without this magic certification. Fortunately this is changing in the face of competition from Europe's Jar etc.

Now if the FAA were to allow certification of a far superior product to the very old fashioned peices of S**T called Lycoming and Continental they would go out of business overnight and have to file for chapter 5 bankruptcy!! The government would then have to bail them out! So therefore no certification until they themselves have copied someone elses product and certified it as their own.

On a positive note the French have been very busy and have already type certified a 300 Hp HDI engine and flown it 1000 hours I believe. Price still high but it will improve. Popular rumour has it that Cessna may have placed orders for these engines for new models of Skylane and that Lycoming are trying to catch up in the face of very stiff competition!!

Lots of varsity chaps also frantically busy testing options but very secretly.
We did a comparison between a Rotax 914 turbo at 105 HP & 16 - 24 lit/hr 150 NM torque fitted to a 2 seat 100 mph homebuilt -
and
A Peugeot HDI turbo engine at only 85 HP but 250 NM of torque with no reduction gearbox burning only 6.4 to 9.6 litres an hour of Jet A1. Plus 20 MPH more.

By the way there is a company in France specifically developing 4 blade props for the diesel market.

In Africa it makes perfect sense as Avgas is hard to get in most places and even if you cant get Jet A1 diesel is always available.

And on a final note did you know some of the Heinkels in WW2 were powered by Daimler Benz DIESELS!!
