Ghana to Buy Russian Helicopters for Peacekeeping Operations

MosNews

Ghana's Defense Minister has said that his country would buy a batch of
Russian Mi-17 helicopters to support the Ghana Armed Forces peacekeeping
operations, Radio Ghana reported on Thursday. However, the number of
aircraft to be purchased and the sum of contract were not disclosed.

Ghana's Defense Minister, Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor said that his department
had completed negotiations with Messrs Wellfind Limited of the United
Kingdom, Rosoboronexport and Kazan Helicopters of Russia, to support the
Ghana Armed Forces peacekeeping operations.

Answering questions in parliament, the minister said that Ghanaian
pilots, flight engineers and technicians were being trained in Russia as
part of the contract. He informed the House that the helicopters will be
ready for shipment to Ghana by the 10th of next month.

According to Dr Addo Kufuor, an air force technical inspection team is
due to depart Accra by the first of next month for the initial
acceptance of the aircraft at the factory in Kazan, Russia.

MI17s everywhere

It seems that this is the standard chopper here in Africa. I currently fly in Rwanda/East Africa and both the millitary and the UN operate MI17s. Same in Congo, Burundi......
Talked to a couple of Pakistani UN pilots recently....they just rebuild a few of them.
