Oryx Down
It seems a bad week (again) for aviation....
Oryx crash lands
01/07/2004 19:56 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Three crew of an SA Airforce Oryx helicopter escaped unharmed when the aircraft crash-landed in the Kempton Park area on Thursday afternoon.
"The helicopter was attempting to land after its flight when it spun out of control and was involved in an uncontrolled landing," the defence department said in a statement.
The helicopter came down at about 14:00 in an open veld near Johannesburg International Airport.
"The crew of the helicopter (a pilot, co-pilot and engineer) escaped unharmed and were taken to 1 Military Hospital (in Pretoria) as a precautionary measure."
A board of enquiry has been convened to determine the cause of the accident, the statement said.
The extent of damage to the aircraft was not yet known.

Apparently the 22 Sqn Oryx (the M-2 for Antartic work variant) was number two in a two ship formation when it experienced a total tail rotor failure (tail rotor gearbox?) while transitioning into the hover at 40 feet AGL.
The helicopter spun and hit the ground hard, causing it to roll over.
I can also confirm that the guys are back with their families for a little R&R
Well done to the crew!
Initial indications are that this accident is not related to the Durban crash last year, which was a tail rotor control failure.

From what I understand, it lost a bearing in the intermediate gearbox and lost the tailrotor. Good job done by the engineer and the pilots.
This is apparently the third time something like this has happened to an Oryx. The one in Durban last year had the same problem.
