AF 413 Mobile in flame.

Hello,

just a report of swiss newspaper Le Matin :
story/transports-catastrophe-evitee-chez-air-france-ca-fume-ca-va-exploser-262578848084

Question: Why companies allow charging mobiles in flight ?
Years ago one could live a few hours without mobiles in use.
There has been several incidents already with NiCad batteries.

Cheers.

I've yet to see any operator explicitly ban mobile charging.

Agreed
And if you install USB charging ports it will be a hard sell...
But battery fire is definitely getting an issue

Working link to the suitably histrionic article: Catastrophe évitée chez Air France: «Ça fume, ça va exploser!»

They stopped using NiCd batteries in mobile phones long time ago. The energy density is too low for a modern smartphone.

I guess you mean Lithium batteries, like lithium ion and lithiym plolymer?

Phones and tablets getting trapped in powered business class seats is a bigger issue. There have been several incidents including aircraft diversions due to this.
