The destination was Montgomery Field, KMYF.. I believe all the ATC directions reference that airport, and it's approaches and runways.
Sad news, indeed. RIP

The recording of the ATC conversation makes me think the pilot wasn't quite right just prior to the accident. One expert speculates there may have been a medical emergency he was dealing with, perhaps a heart attack or stroke. Ironically, the pilot was a cardiologist.

Does anyone know what the ceiling was at the time? Is there any possibility he was in IMC? It doesn't look like it from photos and video at the time, but it sure seems like either an IMC upset or a loss of control due to some other issue, like medical.

Here's the METARs from around the time of the accident (approx. 1915Z). He could have been IMC at vectoring altitude.

Confused? Disoriented? Stalls plane on climb? - Finally heeds ATC command to climb to 5000 without applying additional power? The pilots words were very hard to understand.

Definitely not IMC

Broken or scattered clouds perhaps, but not overcast or IMC. IMHO

In addition, in California, unless there is a fire or fog (or smog) nearby, the visibility is at least ten miles or far more unless you are actually in a cloud, given that the humidity tends to be quite low.

IMHO
