I'm a strong advocate of practice forced landings without power. I do them at least weekly into the different places I fly. They're actually easier onto the water, as you are not usually constrained by the runway dimensions.

As for "best" glide speed, that's a whole discussion in itself!

Not really the point!

Yes - making waves can be problematic, people are "got rid of" for it, especially if they are new. Which , of-course is when they are most likely to spot problems, when they are not yet acclimatised to an environment with all its flaws.

I wish I had some glib comment to offer about this, but it's almost insoluble.

This is all about having a 'Just Culture' - which is a requirement for all European airlines as per EU directive 2003/42.

Sadly, in my experience, the 'Just Culture' is just a toothless version of the preceding, but short lived, 'No Blame Culture', and used as a cover for a return to the airline's beloved 'Blame Culture'

I don't know what the answer is either.
