I am not expecting them to sit around and do nothing. I would advise them to try with all the other airlines and leave Ryanair as the really last resort. There are literally lots of jobs out there, Airlines, Corporate, General Aviation, Instruction you name it. 2017 was the best year in terms of pilot recruitment I have ever seen and I think it will continue in 2018 as well.
Fredbr, I forgot to mention that the people I personally know that started the type rating in January 2017 spent around 43-45 000€ until they got their first pay check. You should keep that in mind too.
