In 1950 when my dad was flying with an Aux Air Squadron based at Ringway, it converted from Spitfires to Vampires. Some months later this Civil Servant asked for directions to the hangar where the Spitfires were being stored. My dad walked him over. Once inside he looked at my dad wistfully and said I have to scrap all of these.
I wonder what they would have been worth if they had been preserved.
