I was at Manchester Airport in 1995 at the fiftieth anniversary of the end of WW2. During the early evening there was an ATC transmission on all frequencies which went something like this:
"Manchester broadcast. There will now be two minutes' RT silence in remembrance of the ending of WW2. We request all stations to observe. Out."
Most of the airfield lights dimmed and all surface traffic - aircraft and vehicles - stopped. I think there were two aircraft on either intermediate or final approach. They might have carried out a two-minute orbit. It was a little eerie but a real privilege to witness 100% observance.
